When I installed Electrum and created the wallet, I wrote down the 12 word recovery phrase.

Obviously I can use this to restore access to my coins in a new Electrum wallet.

I'm trying to better understand if I can use this same 12 word phrase in another (non Electrum) wallet. From my reading, it seems I can. But has anyone actually tried it?

You can't do it. Electrum recovery phrases are not compatible with BIP39 compatible wallets which are fairly common these days. You have to use some version of Electrum to export your private key. You can import a BIP39 seed to Electrum, though.
