If you really need an awesome logo then be ready to pay a decent amount and not $50. Plus the fact that you are making it into a competition for only $50 is hardly going to work.

Do you expect the artist to spend time on a logo with the hope of perhaps winning $50? Atleast any half-decent one won't.

If you are serious about getting a logo designed, ask for portfolios and choose an artist right off the bat. Work with the artist and pay for what they ask and you will receive an awesome logo to your liking.

Yeah, he might get a couple of applicants here, but it sure as hell won't be AWESOME LOGO. He'll be lucky to have at least kind of unique design and not some plagiarized shit. Good logo designers aren't gonna work for such a low pay, especially when it's not guaranteed.

I hate when people disrespect other people's work and expertise. If I was looking for a logo designer, I'd offer at least five times a reward for the winner of the contest and a consolation prize for the other designs of my choice.
