The European Union Air Safety Agency (EASA) has suspended the authorisation for the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) to operate in Europe for six months, the airline's spokesman said on Tuesday.

The move follows the grounding of 262 pilots whose licences the Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan termed “dubious”.

“EASA has temporarily suspended PIA's authorisation to operate to the EU member states for a period of 6 months effective July 1, 2020, with the right to appeal against this decision,” a PIA statement said.

It added that PIA would discontinue all its flights to Europe temporarily.

If this is covid related you might be better off moving it to economics. I can see that they could do this in order to get the eruppean space agencies more flights to be able to keep running (just my speculation on it - the EU member states have given fairly large bailouts to airlines at least the UK have)...

@jackg this is not related to covid and you should have read the article as it clearly states that the issue is related to fake pilot licensing, and since most of them belong to PIA therefore they have decided to ban PIA Airlines. Also it’s pertinent to note that the Pilots association’s has rejected these accusations, and further PIA has the right to appeal which they’ll use and possibly get the ban revoked, hence this issue does fall between politics/society.

Totally something that falls within both sections, fine to be put here -- though none of us are really gatekeepers on what can and what cant be posted here.

Fake pilot licensing though, what in gods fuck. That just sounds like a recipe for disaster and it totally makes sense that the EU is cracking down on this. Last thing you want as a member of the EASA is to have blood on your hands because you turned a blind eye to credible allegations of fake pilot licenses.

If all of this is true (and isn't turned back in appeal) then this is totally a win for the EASA is doing the right thing and showing that they're doing the right thing for the member states.

To clarify I said "if" I don't want that to be taken as some sort of attack or something...

It's happy where it is but I thought the non certified pilot thing has been a problem for a while (I could be mistaken it could be somewhere else) . And if it has this is potentially a delayed reaction from Europe (I don't think waiting for a pilot to crash a plane is the best course of action) and they're still allowed to fly past/over Europe...

I'd have to say that I don't think that was some sort of attack, just you pointing something out. Happens sometimes on this section as its hard to blur the lines b/w the two sections, not an issue at all.

Yeah -- it's a good look that they are finally cracking down on it now, but we all do still know that they've turned a blind eye for sometime. Depends on when they were able to compile evidence and determine if allegations of non certified pilots were credible.
