I am wondering how do people get the "Bitcoin Expert" or "Bitcoin Core dev" badge. I will probably never get them but I am simply curious. I guess you need to be an early adopter and have proven to help the community with helpful solutions.

It's in the name of the title basically. Those people are Core Developers or have contributed vastly to bitcoin and most of its implementations and the protocol, hence the name 'Bitcoin Expert.'

Pretty sure most of those who have worked with Bitcoin Core in the past still have the title Bitcoin Expert, too. Some of those who have the badge and title may not be part of the main core development team, but they still made huge contributions to bitcoin and what it is now.

Also, this topic should be in Meta.

They are admin commendations. They're normally for people who've developed on core itself - normally verifiable from https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/graphs/contributors afaik.

I think the expert title was probably for people who have programmed with bitcoin but haven't directly worked on core (but am not certain).

I added a system of badges to SMF a while ago, though only two are defined now. Here are the current badges:

Bitcoin expertDev&Tech only. People with this badge know enough about the Bitcoin network to reimplement something very like it from scratch. They are capable of intelligently discussing the Bitcoin network: current protocol, possible attacks, proposed changes, etc. Criteria: Recommendation by an existing Bitcoin expert or core dev and approval by a forum administrator.
Bitcoin-Qt core developer Dev&Tech only. These are the core developers of Satoshi's Bitcoin client. They are listed here. Core developers are among the top contributors to Bitcoin-Qt, and they are all bitcoin experts, though they don't also get that badge.

A core dev does not "outrank" a bitcoin expert (or vice-versa), and it's possible for someone without a badge to contribute meaningfully to a discussion with experts and core devs.

Strangely enough, there’s no way to list the profiles that have either of the awarded badges. There are some old threads that drafted some of them (see Bitcoin Expert status , BitcoinTalk expert list. Who uses the badge and Members dengan Badges [Bitcoin-Qt core developer & Bitcoin expert] -> the latter is not in English).

It would be interesting to have the Member search function allow one to search by these honorary badges, which, from a historical/contribution point of view, may lead to some interesting readings.
