The reason that boxers wear mouth guard are usually for protection from around the mouth from the research I have made, at least from the blog and few websites I visited

Different types mouth guards

https://blog.awma.com/5-reasons-mouth-guards-should-be-worn-in-martial-arts/
https://harderpunch.com/why-do-boxers-wear-mouth-guards/

However, beyond the reasons we have reviewed above, my hypothesis is therefore that I think the reasons are not only for physical protection but for psychology protection on the ring  Grin

So you think the only reason that boxer wear mouth guard is to avoid bitting?  Grin  No, I don't think so.
I think it also extends to avoid them from cursing , from using abusive and fowl words on their opponent.

If this is the case, I think maybe it makes the opponent to get more provoked and angry as anger has a way of making someone lose balance and control.
If this is the case, I think by instructing the wearing of mouth guard as a rule,  either the officials are trying to avoid the boxers from being more exposed to blows because they can go out of focused and concentration. Here, I think is not because of the rules of the game not to be violated but to help the opponent guard themselves because it will be chance or advantage for the opponent who is coursing to attack more.

In sighting example, you could relate this with Muhammad Ali in his fighting days tried everything he could to muta some words to his opportunity and that further provoked them on one side or frustrate them because they kind of lose focus

I think this my phycho-political hypothesis can go a long way to help you think deeply on the reasons they cover their mouth beyond just avoiding dental damage.

This is a self made hypothesis from a deep thought.

its not about avoiding cursing.

it protects the teeth not just from oncoming punches from an opponent
but also lets the fighter bite down on something so he can be more enraged without grinding his own teeth or biting his own tongue as he fights back

those without a mouthguard are more cautious to avoid getting hit. and also dont enrage themselves because they dont want to grind their own teeth or risk biting their tongue

Teeth and gums are going to be still tender no matter how fit you are, so boxers are really meant for punching and while they are punching on your face the player might lose all his foreteeth in very few games itself that is why they have guards to protect them at somewhat extent. And in every kind of sport there is always protection gears are involved and it differs from games to games.

Guys I think the physical aspect of it is obvious to everyone and the links too have explained that to details. Therefore, I'm thinking deeply and looking at the possibility of having a psychological aspect too. Or, are there no two sides to a coin again  Huh   Grin

I guess this thread was suppose to be opened in games area at least but because of the topic, that's the reason bringing it here.

So, have you watched a boxing fight where an opponent gets extremely bittered because of what an opponent says during the fight.?

well fights have been using mouthguards for decades. so pretending that fighters now get emotionally reactive due to words said during a fight would debunk the initial premiss you made that mouthguards stop them from saying anything..

anyway the reality of the psychology (not the physical) is by having a mouthguard they can bite down on something and take the pain and not worry about biting their tongue

its the same psychology of biting down on a stick when trying to strap a wound when there is no painkillers around
its not there just for something tasty. its so that you can use the biting reflex as a way to get through the psychological pain without worrying(another psychological trait) of harming yourself in the process. thus allowing you do to more than you would without the guard

its not about verbal cursing

I think some heavyweight might be doing that because of their confidence level to win the fight. About Muhammad Ali, I think he was known to taunt his opponent for whatever reason, maybe to demoralize them.
I watched some of his fight on YouTube .

I think this is the main reason why in any combat sport where you are allowed to hit the head have to wear a mouth piece. The risk of getting a seizure and just biting down on your tongue is just to big. Just look at the many knock out videos where people completely paralyse for a few seconds. Imagining them biting down on their tongue you would be able to save the tongue. The teeth are definitely also important but could more easily be saved at a later stage. Having new teeth is not so severe as losing your tongue. You wouldn't be able to speak or taste anything anymore.

You have a strong point, but I don't agree with that. Mouthpiece were ofcourse solely created to protect the athlete's teeth. If you thought that this protective gear was created not just for physical protection,  that's fine. It's nice how people use things for other purposes.

That Psychology theory of yours isn't the original reason why mouthpiece were created. You probably just associated that for other purposes. And that's a cool thinking!

+1 to all of that.

I don't think anyone in the ring is going to care that much about tossing some curse words at your opponent. At the end of the day you are literally two humans in a square ring fighting like animals, so it'd make sense for some foul language to get used. Nothing wrong with this happening in a professional sport.

If you'd ask 100 professional athletes if they cursed at one another while playing they'd say yes. That's why the players aren't all mic-ed up all the time. If they were, we'd have an interesting situation on live televison.

Boxer's wear those things base on protection so that their will not be face injury, so that is the important of face masks via boxes,
The hand glove is also  for protection to avoid hand injury and bone dislocation, it's help for protecting the hand.
