Of course, it's real. Though it's not as deadly as those other virus we've encountered before, it's still dangerous and can cause death especially when the person affected has already an illness, or have a weak immunity system. It's just sad that those mentioned in the op didn't take it seriously as early as possible. They had to experience the virus itself, and worse, death, before they realize that it's real.
For those who still don't take the virus seriously, maybe they should think twice or thrice or even more before breaking the rules before its all too late. Better safe than sorry.
