I've been eyeing EVs for a while now, 2017 bolt (~200 mile range, full EV) is around $13k USD with less than 40k miles.

I figured 10% down (less than 5 bitcents), and 72-month term, that's less than a half of bitcent a month.

I have enough btc to afford the car outright, but I'm thinking now's the time to buy the gap.

Thoughts? Comments? Anyone find any better deals or worse deals?

Let's here your thoughts on sub-15k full EV, 150+ mile range solutions.

As an owner of a hybrid, I'll tell you these cars are so cheap when used because of the battery.  You have no idea if the previous owner full cycled or left it in the cold, etc.  Replacements are half the price of your purchase, and not covered under warranty.

A new older model EV would be preferable to a used newer EV.

This part of the article should be of concern to you.

Quote
The reason for deals on used models may be that Bolt EVs of this vintage are currently being limited to 90% of their battery capacity, as GM and cell supplier LG Chem work on a solution to an issue potentially related to Bolt EV fire risk.

It's not worth the risk if you have young children; they're likely not able to react properly in an emergency.

Also, is your math off?  I thought this was a really old post or something:

...72-month term, that's less than a half of bitcoin a month.

$13k is only slightly more than 1/3 of a bitcoin in total!  Half a bitcoin a month could nearly get you a new Lambo in one year and a small castle in 7 years.

 Get an e-bike instead:

CAD$2199 which is about USD$1700 so you can almost afford it outright with the 10% down you would put on the car and you'll still be saving the planet.  Then when bitcoin hits US$266k you can buy a brand new EV and maybe something better than a Chevy with a technical issue that could cause a fire?

Fair point.

I'm pretty knowledgeable about battery chemistry.

Iirc, the 2017 chevy ev has a 60 kwh battery, lithium-ion based with a fairly decent durability (> 500 cycles). Most of the used models I was looking at had between 20-30k miles. I'd imagine if the advertised range was 220 miles, it'd have dipped to 210 miles or so due to degradation (excluding weather, etc). Real world is probably going to be closer to 150 miles (esp during winter, after the 10% loss due to fire concerns).

This part of the article should be of concern to you.

10% loss was already calculated in the main post (220 mile battery advertised -> 200 mile range in post).

There's been 5 EV fires out of over 100k cars. I think more Teslas explode than that and no one's forcing a recall on them?

I've edited the OP to from bitcoin -> bitcent.
