Even if I don't like making such statement, there are so many indications showing that Hal could be Satoshi. Forgive me if this has been discussed again in the past. It most likely did, the whole Satoshi story is interesting to analyze. I'm creating this thread, to get replies stating the opposite.
(Also forgive me if I'm saying something false)

Reasons why Finney could be Satoshi Nakamoto:
  • He was the first Bitcoin recipient.
  • He was working on an electronic cash system before bitcoin, called RPOW in which he used proof-of-work, but as far as I read did not solve the double-spend problem. He created the first reusable proof of work. (Hal really worked on proof of work)
  • He lived in the same town where Dorian Nakamoto lived which can't be a coincidence. He either is Satoshi or someone got an eye on him.
  • There is no satoshi activity after Finney passed away. (I know, not that good argument)

Knowing the aboves I can create two theories that are added to the conspiracy-theory-collection-bin.

1) Hal finally finds a solution to double-spend problem using the chain of blocks and creates a peer to peer e-cash system, but doesn't want to be known for his creation. To achieve this, Satoshi Nakamoto gets bornt. Hal emails the Cryptographic mailing list about this, including himself. In order for this to be true, Hal Finney must have been a great actor. It most likely didn't happen like that. Although, he never mentioned of Dorian Nakamoto.

I still can't believe, though, that he sent emails to himself just to cover that part, but the above reasons make me think he may be the one. I just can't skip the fact that a guy named Dorian Nakamoto was living in the same place Hal did.

2) Someone knows both Hal Finney and Dorian Nakamoto and wants to confuse everyone by using Nakamoto on his pseudonym making Hal a suspect. He knew that sometime in the future, once bitcoin reputation will be increased, he'd leave the project.

I think those are really reasons why Finney isn't satoshi.

If Satoshi decided to keep himself anonymous, why the hell would he make the first public transaction to himself, exposing his ID?

Additionally, as Finney was already working in a electronic cash system makes him the perfect recipient to receive the first bitcoin. Very few people would have access to bitcoin in 2009 (because no one never heard of it), and he had the access to that information.

Agreed, but I want you to explain me the Dorian Nakamoto coincidence. If Dorian wasn't living in the same town with Hal, those statements would be the same with every other satoshi suspect. But he was living in the same town with Dorian Nakamoto. Even if Hal wasn't Satoshi, someone that knew him personally would be the one.

Dorian Sakamoto Isnt  satoshi...

And Dorian lived in California, which is THE place for every new tech related to internet (Google , facebook, Amazon, silicon valley amd so on)

I dont think it is a coincidence or relevant t fact...  satoshi may just have opened some newspaper of his city amd choose a random name...

If both finney and Dorian lived in some crazy place like Cambodia or fiji island I would agree with you that it is a weird coincidence

All these arguments suck.

  • He was the first Bitcoin recipient.

How does this prove anything? Of course someone had to be the second person to participate in the network after Satoshi.

  • He was working on an electronic cash system before bitcoin, called RPOW in which he used proof-of-work, but as far as I read did not solve the double-spend problem. He created the first reusable proof of work. (Hal really worked on proof of work)

That's why he found Bitcoin so early - he was already interested in this field, he was participating in cypherpunks mailing list, he believed that a project like Bitcoin is possible.

  • He lived in the same town where Dorian Nakamoto lived which can't be a coincidence. He either is Satoshi or someone got an eye on him.

This is a coincidence, because Dorian Nakamoto has nothing to do with Bitcoin or cryptography.

  • There is no satoshi activity after Finney passed away. (I know, not that good argument)

Satoshi stopped being active long before Hal Finney passed away.

Hal Finney was just my friend. Well, he just was the first man who responded to discuss the Bitcoin project. He was a great man but he had to die unexpectedly. I missed him very much. If he did not die then, he  could be working on a better project than Bitcoin.

Hal Finney is not Satoshi but can we say the same thing about Adam Back?
