Some trivia about how tough a HDD would be in terms of maximum and minimum temperatures.

For cold situation - A consumer freezer can't get cold enough to damage a hard drive. The minimal non-operational hard drive temperature is around minus 40 degrees Celsius.

For hot - A hard drive's typical maximum non-operating temperature is around 70 degrees Celsius. The non-operating maximum temperature is around ten degrees higher than the hard drive's operating temperature, as hard drives can get very hot when in use.

but since we do talk about on a dumping site then its already dead since day 1 when it is already on  that smokey mountain.
One drop of liquid or moisture then inside of those will be useless.

That is a real possibility. Moisture and the chemicals present at the dumping site would destroy the hard drive in a matter of months, if not days. The odds are stacked up against James Howells. First he needs to find the exact location of the hard drive, which is like searching for a needle in the haystack. And then the hard drive needs to be intact after all those years. IMO, he doesn't even have a one in million chance.
