How reliable do you find the coingecko trust score? I'm looking to purchase minor coins

They are provided by TokenInsight, which can be paid to give a project some extra points and biased view. Better to do your own research.

As a follow up - "how" does one do research? All I can think of is

• to do a google - strike that, DDG search on the exchange looking for complaints
  ask around on forums such as this.

Do you have a list of sites that review exchanges which you trust?
