It does whatever Infura, QuickNode, Nodesmith, Alchemy,... do, except that it is decentralized. Chainlink would be the best analogy, except that this kind of a network would not act as an oracle but as a way to connect to the smart contracts via web3.

I have tried doing my own research but the search engines are failing with BS results.

Thank you kindly for sharing. Why do I ask?  I want to invest, that is why...
