ledger device is not genuine

Hi guys,

when I try to use ledger live app and connect my ledger nano s device to the computer, its get fail and genuine check doesn't pass.

I bought my device 2 years ago and there was no genuine check in wallet application at that time. I have some bitcoin on this wallet and I am not sure is my device genuine or not ? is it possible that my wallet has been compromised?

First thing is first, if you know any address that has balance in it then using the explorer check if it still has the balance. If it's there then we can be sure that your coins were not stolen.

A device can be faulty, and I guess if it was faulty then it will fail the genuine check stage.

I hope you have the seed and the pin written on a paper or anywhere. If nothing works then order a new one from the official Ledger site and try to restore the wallet using the same seed and pin.

I'm pretty sure there was a check 2 years ago as well. Does Live tell you that it isn't genuine or that it failed to check your device?

Try a few other USB cables. Perhaps another computer. If you can, please write here the exact error it gives you.

If for whatever reason you believe that your device is no longer secure, then moving your balance to another wallet (a new one) would be a good idea. The chance of it being compromised just because it failed to pass the genuine check is hard to check, but if you don't think that your seed has been exposed somewhere, maybe the chance is low.

In the end, if you no longer feel safe, there's nothing wrong with a new setup imo.

Your ledger device could show this issue for several reasons, and maybe it could be a problem with your faulty USB cable, or if you haven't updated your device firmware in a long time.
You can try to open Ledger Live app and go to Settings-Help and then click on Repair Your Ledger device.

You can follow the guide from ledger website to check if your device is genuine, and it depends how exactly you purchased your wallet directly from their website or from some third party reseller.

I wrote before about many attack vectors for hardware wallets and supply chain attack is one of them.
There is also evil maid attack if someone modified or replaced your wallet with identical tampered clone that is not genuine, so do NOT enter you seed words if this device or any other website is asking you to do it again.

Failing that, have you tried contacting Ledger support? Do not expect a "fast" response time given that they are probably still dealing with the huge level of support tickets raised after the data leak last year... but they will be the people most likely to be able to assist with determining why your device is showing that message, and what you can do about it.
