No hacker will want to spend time on a platform to steal money and return it, hacking isn't easy as many thinks, it takes lot of effort and time I'm just surprised that many are thanking the hacker behind poly network for returning the fund he or she stolen, hackers only tend to be nice when there are traces left behind probably through their own mistakes..

True, Hackers are never  people with good moral character. Their main aim is to steal funds of inocent investors/traders and do the job in a way that no traces are left behind but if by mistake or by accident they left behibd some traces which can help authrities to reach them then  they become good boys/girls and return the funds they had stolen. As a good practice always secure your account by using all safety measures and Exchanges should do all they can to protect funds of their clients, as it is their prime resposiblity.

That's true or probably he just wanted to do it, return it and ask for reward in that case he will earn money in good way. But just like what you have said there's a lot of different angle to this kind of story may be you were right he leave some traces that's why it's better to return it rather than keeping it.

This is what you are talking about, right?

https://www.reuters.com/technology/defi-platform-poly-network-reports-hacking-loses-estimated-600-million-2021-08-11/

Anyway, the article states that the hackers did it for fun and said that it's going to be returned and not interested in the money involved. See the quotes below.
A person claiming to have perpetrated the hack said they did it "for fun" and wanted to "expose the vulnerability" before others could exploit it, according to digital messages shared by Elliptic, crypto tracking firm, and Chainalysis.

It was "always the plan" to return the tokens, the purported hacker wrote, adding: "I am not very interested in money."

Your reasoning could be one way to say that they couldn't get away freely, but it could also be this above where they just wanted to show the possible threats and vulnerabilities of these technologies that we have now.

I'm curious about what people would feel involved in DeFi and what they think about it.

Some hackers are very adventurous. I know that my friend encountered a hacker last time, but not for his money, but for the files on my friend’s computer.
After freezing the file, he left a meaningless message. He doesn't need money. He just wanted to show off his strength. But my friend's file is very important, and I cannot communicate with this hacker.
Later, my friends and I developed to back up important files on computers that were not connected to the Internet.
I hope you don’t encounter hackers.

First, of course, you need good knowledge to hack. But it also depends on how difficult it is to find and exploit a security hole. Some software have very simple bugs, others need deep knowledge to exploit bugs. In addition, not all hackers are the same. Some do it to prove themselves or to build a reputation in the scene. They usually don't care if they profit monetarily from it. Others are only after the money. Generalizing it the way you did is not accurate in my opinion.

Some hackers do this as a way of living. I believe big companies or platforms would pay big money for found flaws especially if the hackers return the funds, although not all of them do so (neither the hackers or the platforms). There are lots of people who've found their job by breaching through security.

If a hacker want to get hired that's when they hack the project network to show them where they lack security but the hackers would have informed the project before the hack takes place, hackers are 99% bad people who wants millions and returning funds isn't their style at all

It shouldn't be this way then, every projects can pay you if you can find flaws in their system right? But that's a different thing entirely I'm sure this hacker leave a back door opened mistakenly that's why they are refunding the money, the risk of getting caught later is high and they know it

Most will not but there are still some hackers that chooses to return the stolen money from them and at least for me, it is a good thing.
This just shows that the security of the project is very weak, very weak that they are holding a huge amount of money and yet they can't upgrade their security and they let the hackers hack their system.

On the other hand, there is a possibility too that the hacker choose to just return the assets he stole because he left with some traces online. Enough for the authorities to trace him thus, he chooses to return the money. After all, the hacker already said that he hacked the system just for fun and to show how vulnerable the system of the project is. I just hope that Poly Network will upgrade their security protocols but with what happened to them, I doubt that there will be many users that will use their platform because they know that the project can be hacked and it can be hacked again in the future.

I guess the developer should give him something as reward because that hacker found a bug how to penetrate and steal his money Grin

A true hacker will not disturb anything inside the target, but they want to show a bug in your devices and tell them how to fix it. They will not share to public too many details but will only talk privately with the owner so next time, the owner can upgrade or fix or search for the other bug and protect it because the other hacker will not do the same.

That project is lucky to meet that hacker and who knows, the developer can ask the hacker to join in the project as head security for the network or other related security-related things. But I do not think the hacker will want to join Grin

It's good they return the money ... assuming they actually did...
It's very easy do evil and be rich... but imagine what the world will be like if everybody does it.  The minority who do such evil are creating problems in the world.  What is restraining most people are their conscience and the fear of the consequences of getting rich from doing evil ... Besides, I don't understand how people enjoy that kind of money.

The thief should use the skill in bounty hunting or something. I guess they pay fairly well. Use the hardwork for good.
