It looks like Coinmarketcap trying to promote shitcoins over being neutral anymore because when I open their site, their default home page is showing 24 hours of trending coins/tokens instead of show the top coins/tokens.

This is the definition of trending cryptocurrencies by CMC, someone could create a bot to click the coin/token on CMC to make it trending.

Listed below are the hottest trending cryptocurrencies on CoinMarketCap. These are the coins and tokens that have the most visibility in the last 24 hours across the site. CoinMarketCap has millions of visitors everyday, which means that the list below is a great way to understand the current trends, pumps and losses in the market.

I have checked Coingecko monthly traffic before and it is very huge. The site is also visited by tens of millions of people. Although, Coinmarketcap has the highest traffic.

To move to Coingecko? Most people are not the forum type of people and they are not people that really seek information like this. Even if you move to Coingecko and also advise people to do the same, this will not reduce Coinmarketcap traffic.

Anyone that is learning about crypto should first learn that almost all coins are shit coins while some promoted their shit coins on sites like Coinmarketcap.

You must always verify and evaluate information by your self and not rely only in a third part.
In the past there was on that site CMC also clear scam ads (scam services related gambling).
Unfortunately most of us (people that follow this field for many years) know very well how many scams are behind crypto sector.
These topics are somewhat useful. However people that would fall into this scam projects are always newbie that will never made a research before investing.

As you can see from the above image, this is no big deal whether one is set at default or not, you can change yours to what you prefer. This is why it's good to know what you are dealing with before dealing with it. Fine, this could be an agenda, and of course, it could be for money. Still, we can't verify that, and we can't teach anyone how to run their websites.

CMC is not daft, I am sure they must have thought of that even before they became this popular, they have their own ways of verifying things. Otherwise, everything would have been messy even before now.

Moving to Coingecko is a choice and "trending" doesn't translate to top-rated overall, Bitcoin is the best. Though strange, Bitcoin may not be in the 100 trending position everyday, especially this time that it's selling.

I think this is a better approach compared to the previous system. I have seen people selling services to make a coin "trend" before.

I can see it from CMC perspective, it's better this way because:

1. They're going to make money off of this.
2. The user know that the "trending" is paid for, by showing it using another color. So we know it's not organic, and it's just paid for.

Moving to Coingecko is a choice and "trending" doesn't translate to top-rated overall, Bitcoin is the best. Though strange, Bitcoin may not be in the 100 trending position everyday, especially this time that it's selling.

No one will want to check bitcoin all the time because it is listed at the top part of the site. Bitcoin is always trending and has more trading volume that those shit coins that are listed on the page that is not visible but people will want to search and look for them on the site. They are just using it to make people fall for their ponzi scheme in a way the coins will pump an later get dumped.

Coinmarketcap.com isn't neutral since a long time.

They were acquired by Binance a few years back  , so ofc they will promote stuff which interests binance.

I think Coingecko is a nice alternative.  But Coinmarketcap is still usable.

When you open the website, it shows Trending coins by default, but you can switch it back to Top coins, and if you do, when next you open the site, it would display Top coins by default.

I think its not like that since maybe you click the top trending coins then exit on their site, then when you comeback you are redirected unto that trending tab again.

Try to check it again and click their top coin then exit then check back their site, you can see that you will redirected on top coins again.

But I will not get surprised if coinmarketcap would do it since somehow they are running a business. For sure they accept to market those shitcoins especially if they are paid huge money.

I thought that's what OP was talking about, but even regarding the "normal trending" I believe that this whole "pay to boost" thing would encourage people to steer away from the other third party services out there.

I gave up on religiously following what's on coinmarketcap especially with thing to do with "Trending" or "Hot". At one point, these are the guys who even ranked a Ponzi scheme high up there. Remember Bitconnect?

And they when they got acquired by Binance, they even made more of a mess. You got to realized that it was not just about money. Most of the so-called trends are actually not natural whether paid or not and the earlier you know this, the better.

My advice to you is to ignore all the noise and njust use whatever you like more. I personally prefer Coingecko as I got used to it, but for my purpose (literally only checking bitcoin price) even CMC would do.

I beg to disagree, CMC used to be  worse in the past before Binance took over so I end up using Coingecko instead.

What a load of crap. It's a site I used to visit quite a lot in the past, but now I hardly ever visit it. From now on, even less so. I don't have any shitcoins, I don't want any shitcoins, and if I visited it in the past, it was to see how the shitcoins that could compete with bitcoin in the future were doing. I've been a hardcore Bitcoin maximalist for a long time now, so I'll leave you the website for those of you who like to play at the casino (and lose).

coingecko is a good alternative, but they are following in coinmarketcap footsteps imo unfortunately. but i would argue anything is better than coinmarketcap.

I hate it when I've firstly noticed that. I am not clicking anything and the page directly loads to the 'trending' page that consists of those unknown coins to me. We have no choice, we're just their visitors and target markets and can only hope that this will change soon. I think that they're just taking the advantage while the bull run is still on. Maybe once we transition to the next position of the market, they'll start removing this trending page. IIRC, there's already that 24-hour trending, winners and losers page before but this time, they're highlighting it and making it appear easier.

Binance has all the money in the world. They could have just bought a website like DEXScreener instead of turning CoinMarketCap into a shitcoin pumping website. It might not be technically illegal, but it still probably qualifies as a dark pattern when you give users something entirely different to what they might have been looking for.

I understand you can change the configuration so it gives you the normal ranking they’ve always had, but this is dependent on cookies, so if you visit in incognito mode or your browser removes cookies after a while, you will get memecoins and scams paying to boost their ranking.

They are promoting, I guess their management changed or something, because for the past few years they’ve been showing their own top cryptocurrencies. I think Coingecko shows more accurate results. Recently, they made every coin submission paid, so yes, they are charging to list coins and tokens. Who knows what these scam coins are paying to appear in the trending list.

I will not be surprised if it becomes difficult to find bitcoin in the midst of all these ads. Since Binance purchased the platform and has turned into a shitcoins advertising tool.
The best thing to do is follow the price of bitcoin alone through open source and with a decrease in the preparation of visits, they may change their marketing plans.

I fucking thought it was hacked when I first saw it.

Tried a few times to refresh the page, no luck. I had to go to coingecko instead. Their loss. I should have made the switch long time ago but somehow i was used to cmc. It is probably its brand effect. I was blocking all its ads thanks to ublock origin though. So their bullshit never reached me.

Since they fucked their website up beyond repair just so their bullshit can reach me (and people like me), it is time to dump them into the trash can.
