Trying to avoid buying more MOBO

How many pcie extender have you been able to run on a single motherboard? I heard that for some only two slots works per pcie x4 slots, is there anyone running more than one of this extenders on a single mother?

The number is limited by:

The CPU (google cpu + pcie lanes to see how many you have)
The chipset the board is built on (and how it is implemented)
The bios

These things determine how many gpus a single PC can manage.

So the answer varies greatly by configuration.

I think it's just better to get another MOBO, this time with lots of PCIe slots like 14-15 yes such MOBO are available, there is a difference between MoBO that are build specially for mining and MoBO that just happens to have more PCie lanes, I have one with 5x PCie x4 slots but only four GPUs works inside, when try to add an extra the Mobo is keep rebooting

I had nothing but issues with those PCIe extenders in the past. It either doesn't work at all, or all the slots don't work properly. And even if they work, for some reason I always get some type of stability issues.

What the above poster said its right, try and get some type of special mining MOBO instead of using a regular motherboard with a bunch of extenders. I think the issue is that the USB cables don't have the perfect insulation and there is noise and interference which causes stability issues. More wires... more issues.

The issues with mining motherboards is that during mining booms they are usually hard to come by. There is a low supply of them because manufacteurs don't build too many of them because its buyers only come from a small niche market.

It's a big headache don't buy them, I will only use those splitters on a motherboard that has one or two pcie x4slots, it's better to buy bigger motherboard that can contain over 10 GPU, this will even safe you some extra power and money too

I like motherboards with 6 Pciex slots to 12 ones.I prefer mining motherboards also as they perform better because they are built for mining.Sure ASUS,Gigabyte and Asrock has motherboards not specifically for mining with 6 Pciex slots which can work but better to use the mining motherboards,also ASUS and the likes also build mining motherboards like B250 Mining pro from Asus or H81 Pro Btc from Asrock.My point is always use mining motherboards for better performance and of course to limit buying other motherboards.For example a motherboard with 12 Pciex slots is a good example to keep you running well and not needing a new motherboard unless you are going add more and more cards,that is when you inevitably need a new motherboard.

And to come to your initial point,PCIE extenders as already said do not work that well.I tried them but with no luck in the past,I am now happy with mining motherboards with a lot of Pciex slots which are running great.

There is alot used mobo like h61 h81 they also mine fine and very cheap.

There is no way to avoid MOBO if you have more graphic cards you want to use for mining, forget pcie expansion because they don't work that good it's better to find expansive mining motherboard with 8 to 12 GPUs slots

I wish Rebtech still had stock.  I have several of their blades and simply put at $149 they were incredible deals (included cpu and ram).

Sadly they were last $189 or more and now completely out of stock.  8 gpus and no little edge card needed for the risers was very nice.  But i still have one more to expand the farm too when gpus get reasonable.
 

And best of all only needed a single 6pin PCIE power plug for the whole mobo...made using server psus super easy with no ATX needed at all.

If you don't lots of space available go for rebtech motherboard they are so slim and only need to plug in usb from risers to start mining, the mistake I did was thinking I'm only going to be fine with 6 GPUs so I bought motherboard with 6 pcie slots but I ended up wanting more GPUs, always go for the best motherboard like 12gpus from day one you will definitely want to add more GPU sooner or later

check pcie lines on cpu side, and its safer buying other mobo and limit around 12gpus each of them, just in case crash happen only affected smaller number if you trying build bigger farm, yeah single rig you want maximazing gpus on single board, never try above 12 gpus on windows side, linux maybe helpfull on this.

They don't always work very well and on most motherboards you can only use on pcie splitter, I don't like them and I never will it's better to buy mining motherboards with 12gpus slots available, this will even save you more power consumptions
