Impact of holograms on grading

Maybe this was already known but in case you ever wondered why your ICG grade(s) came in lower than expected for your coin(s), see below.  It appears holo's are considered a part of the coin and things like centering as well as bubbling, wrinkling, or scratching of the holo's are really taken into account and can pull your grade down, significantly in some cases.  Coinmakers, please take notice too.

This is new to me; I've gotten maybe 30 coins graded from ICG so far & had no idea that the hologram was a factor...

To each their own I guess. I remember ANACS would not downgrade terrible Silver tarnishing and milk spots that were clearly visible, pulling MS68-MS69's.

Yes, it does suck, but it makes sense, and again I'm sorry I assumed everyone knew this as well with them... (I don't think anacs particulary cared, but can't recall).

it probably did affect your grade on the coins if the holo's had any issues.

This is not completely on the point of holograms, but another consideration for anyone buying raw, redeemed coins. In addition to the condition of the hologram, the care at which the hologram was lifted matters. I've had 2 redeemed items come back from ICG and PCGS with "damaged" designations. ICG will still give a grade but puts damaged on the label. PCGS will holder it to acknowledge it as an authentic coin, but denies it a grade.
