Probably his mentor sees that it will take time before he will get a grasp of actual trading methods such as TA. So being pin to fundamental first is a good way to let him know that holding Bitcoin is possibly profitable, that will at least calm his mind and not to worry about useless stuff and focus on learning.
when we are day trading the fundamentals don't matter, what matters is what the chart is saying at that moment, the chart data is everything we need at that moment to buy or sell.
True that reading charts, and comparing regular data with TA help traders to know the possible entry and exit point of a trade. But technical analysis can't be learned in a night or two. It needs time.
