Hi all.

I am the creator of the podcast Dr Bitcoin - The Man Who Wasn't Satoshi Nakamoto (https://anchor.fm/dr-bitcoin) and I'm working on a new series pulling together all the threads of the Mt. Gox story into one narrative over multiple episodes. I already have lots of material to work from, but if there is anyone out there who was involved in Mt. Gox in any capacity who wouldn't mind chatting to me (Telegram, Whatsapp, voice chat etc) about their experience, I'd love to hear from you.

Please reply/DM me if you are happy to talk about your side of the story, or you know someone who could help offer their experience.

Thanks.

In this topic Bitcointalk history of MtGox and how a Bitcointalk post caught the MtGox hacker., you will find all information you want to search for in addition to the price of Bitcoin and links to the topics that were talking about that platform at the time.

If you read the responses, you will find some sub-topics such as this one: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=444.msg3876#msg3876 (Hash password)
DIRECT DOWNLOAD LINK FOR LEAKED MT. GOX ACCOUNT DATABASE (CSV FILE) https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=19576.0

It seems that the platform had many backdoors and to end up losing all those bitcoins would not be surprising.

That's very useful - thanks. It's not easy navigating bitcoin talk for this info, so it's great to have a thread already there!

Hopefully there's enough personal experiences there to fill the gap that exists in my narrative.

Cheers.

One old forum member also having Mt Gox skin that sticks to mind is OgNasty. Just tagging here so they might see it. Think the last update I recall from them was about the NFTs being issued to members pending claims. Apologies if I was mistaken.

This because of the looming repayment finally happening? I actually lost track, always seems to be "happening soon".

I actually don't get any sort of notification when I'm "tagged" but happened upon this thread luckily.  Smiley

I do have experience dealing with mtgox from a couple of different angles.  I had a personal interaction with Mark Karpelès prior to the closure that should have raised a red flag for me and also was involved with some escrow deals involving mtgox at the time of collapse.  I'm still working through the mess that was left behind, but hope to get it resolved this year.  I didn't take from the recent email that we'd be getting funds next month like everyone else seems to have, but I'm hopeful nevertheless.

I'm not on whatsapp or telegram, but I could be open for a chat.

Thanks - will DM you this week.

@buwaytress This isn't specifically about the payouts potentially coming, but it did make me look to see if anyone had ever put the whole story together, and they hadn't. There have been interviews with major players since, so I think the whole thing could be a good series.

Great that you found someone so quickly, and that I wasn't wrong (and that OgNasty saw it).

I do think it's an interesting period in Bitcoin (that is, crazily enough, still unfolding). I always saw it as a watershed moment for Japan. Culturally, there was a lot of guilt and shame and dishonour in what happened (despite it not really being Japan's fault) resulting in the push for fast-track legislation. I have a feeling there's a gold mine in there if you find someone from Japan's legal side to also interview. They're known to be very open, if not eager to tell their side of the story.

I was always surprised that people were leaving coins or fiat on mtgox and not moving either the coins off or the fiat off pretty quickly.  The interface and software always seemed rickety and poorly designed from a computer science perspective.  It turned out to be an accurate assessment from merely looking at the software from the web side and seeing some of the errors that would pop up. Nothing is perfect of course, but it seemed to be somewhat carelessly thrown together, particularly as the fiat value of bitcoin increased over the years.

Even now, if one has to deal with an exchange (any of them - Coinbase or Gemini, you name it), one should put the fiat or bitcoin there and then move it elsewhere.  The exchanges certainly seem to be more robust and better designed today, but do you really want to trust your coins to someone else?

I think that there weren't too many exchange bankruptcies (if any) prior to Mt Gox. It was the biggest exchange at the time so despite their bad support and deposit/withdrawal issues it had a lot of recognition and trust in the community. I remember reading a thread where people who believed Gox had only temporary problems were bidding for accounts. Even when the exchange was down for weeks there were many people willing to bet on it coming back in just a few days.

Yeah, exactly. We have to understand it from the perspective of a period in time when it simply wasn't easy to find a reputable entity to trade significant volumes of Bitcoin.

It's like the Trust system here. Mt Gox had a lot of approval ratings from old forum users, Ver comes to mind -- he apologised later for recommending everyone to use Mt Gox but it's no different from me recommending users as escrows or services I'd use -- where there is no good decentralised/trustless alternative.

And in some ways, the lengthy litigation at least attempts to make users whole -- unlike other exchanges that have folded.

OP, please ask them, in general, what's their most probable inclination once they're already holding their coins in their wallets. Are they selling, OR will they simply be HODLing? I believe because they're "Bitcoin OGs", they are probably HODLing?

I guess you could always try to talk with Judas Roger Ver, but I think he could be busy dealing with some court cases for dealing with many shitcoins and leverage trading.
He is not very much active in forum (his profile is MemoryDealers) but he is well aware of MtGox drama, and he publicly promoted it.... probably lost some money there as well.

I don't see Roger being so much active in media or in forums like before, but he is back posting on twitter, so I am sure drbitcoinpod can contact him there @rogerkver.
I don't agree with many things he did in the past, but he was right about some things and I always like to listen to other opinions about anything, not to live like closed in eco chamber.
Maybe it's a good idea to watch some documentaries about MtGox and Mark Karpeles, like Bitcoin Big Bang (2018) for example.

Do you actually believe a person like Roger Ver will have his coins stuck in Mt.Gox? He was probably already talking to Mark Karpeles to help him withdraw his coins because he already knew what was going to happen to the exchange, WHILE telling the community that it's safe to hold your coins there. He didn't want everyone to panic to make withdrawal easy for him. Haha.

The other issue you may have is there are a lot of people who don't want to talk about it.

I mentioned this thread to someone who is not on bitcointalk and he basically said that unless it's known and public that you had funds there talking about it even anonymously to someone is not a good idea since you never know what you might say that can identify you. I think it's a bit paranoid, but I do understand where they are coming from. People like OgNasty who were known to have funds and have no problem talking about it are one thing. Finding / getting the others will be difficult, and it's kind of bad about that because they probably have some good views.

With that being said, yes I was using them, and I got everything out long before the implosion. No real reason other then luck, was going to be traveling a lot for work back then and figured I would never have time to do anything with the BTC that was there so I pulled everything out. Just a bit of luck on my part.
