Please excuse me for the newbie question. I'm trying to set up private mining pool with pool.py and one question bothers me:

Should the standart client be in generate mode to allow the remote miners to generate coins?

I don't believe that the generate setting has any bearing on the getwork process.

Tips are always welcome and can be sent to 1CZ8QgBWZSV3nLLqRk2BD3B4qDbpWAEDCZ

Thanks to ye, we have the final piece.

You have to run bitcoin in 'daemon' mode - ie server mode. As far as I know that is the only requirement. You naturally then have to point each GENERATING client to that server ie "http://192.168.1.xx:8332" or something of that sort depending on what is the IP of the machine where the bitcoin daemon is running on.
