The combatants were separated by three or less landed punches in nine of the twelve rounds even though Roach threw 121 more punches than Davis. Davis landed 6 more power punches than Roach, while Roach landed 15 more jabs than Davis. There was a controversial moment early in round nine where Davis ate a jab and then voluntarily took a knee before going to his corner to have them wipe grease out of his eye. Had that voluntary knee been ruled a knockdown, two of the judges’ scorecards would have swung Roach’s way. Nonetheless, Roach out-threw and slightly out-landed Davis, and closed the fight strong, out-landing Davis 16-9 in the final stanza. One judge scored the fight 115-113 for Davis, while the other two judges turned in identical 114-114 scorecards.

As what we say, numbers don't lie, and it's the fault of the referee for not counting that voluntary knee as a knockdown. We have seen a lot of boxers doing that and have been counted. So clearly, the referee make a mistake here.

I don't know about the time table though, he is still very young and could continue fighting. As for the knee he looks at the referee first when I try to watch the replay, but still though if he wanted to stop it, that is the best thing to do, to take a knee, but the referee should make a count and not giving him the chance to go to his corner. I haven't heard what the referee has to say after that fight though, and it was really a big blunder on his side not to call that knee. But if Tank wanted a rematch then it's good, but I have a feeling that Tank is going to prepare in this fight and that one opportunity of Lamont Roach to win and become a champion at 135 lbs has been robbed by the referee himself. Hopefully NYAC will review the big mistakes made by the referee.

Doesn't make sense for him to declare his retirement after this "humiliating" result. Just because he has been humbled by Lamont he suddenly thinking of retirement? And if he did definitely he was affected mentally by this fight as fight fans thought that he really lost this one.

For the numbers, it's just very odd that he didn't throw that much, the numbers could be below his average. Not defending Tank, but it looks like he doesn't feel good in this fight and could really be bothered by the hair spray in the early rounds and it affected his eyes.

Let's see if Tank is going to give Lamont Roach the needed rematch. As for the referee's decision, here is what the WBA has to say,

From our perspective, Willis’ decision was not unreasonable or unjustifiable. He ruled in real-time that Davis had not been struck by a punch before going down, and therefore, no knockdown should be recorded. Judges, by regulation, must follow the referee’s rulings—they do not have the authority to override his decisions on knockdowns.

Some skeptics have suggested that Willis’ call benefited Davis unfairly, but we do not subscribe to that notion. In our long experience judging fights, we see no evidence of favoritism—only a referee prioritizing the physical safety of a fighter who appeared compromised by an eye injury.
