Help with Old Blockchain.info Recovery Phrase Template

Hey folks,

I found an old letter, obviously from blockchain.info (now blockchain.com), that shows a 12-word recovery phrase. The problem is, my aunt, who passed away many years ago, wrote down 24 words instead. The letter seems to be a template from blockchain.com, formerly blockchain.info.
I’ve tried entering the words in different ways, but I can’t restore the account or access the wallet because I don’t even know the address or any other details.

My question is: Has anyone else seen a template from blockchain.info where you have to write down your recovery phrase? Is this real? I guess this is from around 2017 when she created the account.

first of all I hope you actually find some bitcoin in that wallet
from what I know the blockchain wallet only supports 12 word recovery phrases and it doesn’t accept 24 word phrases

But as long as you have 24 words what you can do is try is to download Sparrow wallet https://sparrowwallet.com/
it supports 24 word phrases and you can use it to try and recover your wallet

if that doesn’t work maybe your aunt was smart enough not to put all the eggs in one basket she could have made two separate blockchain wallets each one giving 12 words
whatever you do make sure you never share those words with anyone

you dont need to know any address or other details as long as u have the words

If you have 12 word seed phrase, that's probably BIP39 and you don't have to import it into blockchain.com. You can use many other wallets.
Old blockchain.com seed phrases included 16-20 words.

Are you sure the seed phrase included 12 words?
Note that a seed phrase doesn't necessarily include 12 words and it can be 24 word long.

If it is a 12 word seed phrase you dont have to import that to blockchain.com you can simply import it to any wallet that allows you to set derivation path. I suggest Electrum Wallet. Download it and import your seed. When it asks for a derivation path copy paste this exact path:

m/44'/0'/0'

This is the path blockchain wallets were using back in the day. Let it sync and then transfer your bitcoins, if you have left any.

It's worth mentioning that OP should also check BIP39.

And about the derivation path:
m/44'/0'/0' is the default derivation path for legacy wallets and you don't need to change the derivation path, if that's the path you want to generate your addresses on.

The 24-word seed phrase written down by your aunt may not be generated from blockchain.info. Why?
Because if I remember correctly, they generated 15, 17, 19, and 21-word seed phrases; they don't generate 24-word seed phrases.

If she wrote 24 words, it means it's a BIP39 seed phrase. You can import this one into Electrum by enabling BIP39. It should be your aunt's wallet.

Oooh! It seems that you managed to restore access to the wallet that belonged to your aunt, which is great that everything was well.

From now on, avoid this blockchain dot com wallet, as it isn't a reliable wallet, instead, use Electrum, Sparrow Wallet or Bitcoin Core.

Blockchain.com upgraded their system in 2016 and generated 12 word BIP39 seed phrases after that. Before that upgrade, blockchain.com seed phrases were non-standard and they included 16-20 words.

I don't think they included their 16 and 20 words. What I remember using blockchain.info wallet legacy non-HD wallet it was 13, 15, 17, 19, and 21-word seed phrases.

There's an old recovery tool for this created by blockchain.info on GitHub, but it seems they already deleted that tool. My seed phrase is 15 words, but the problem is blockchain.com is asking for email to access the right wallet, as they said, but I don't remember my email password; it was a Yahoo email, and I can't recover it. That is the reason why my old wallet was not accessible until now. I have a few BTC there, and I am sure the private key of that wallet also has soft and hard fork coins.
So, there's no 16-20-word phrase.

At least take a picture of the logo part and or course, do not capture the actual seed phrase.
Then share that logo's image here, that can be easily cross-checked to other seed phrase backup template available online.

AFAIK, there's no official printable template offered by Blockchain(dot)info.
But it could be personally made or by a third-party where the user can customize the logo.

Be careful on those seemingly "lost letters" though (if you or your aunt found it somewhere)
Because most of those are designed to fool the finder by instructing them to restore the backup phrase/prvKey
waiting for them to send bitcoins to the restored wallet only to be swept immediately by the culprit.

Back in 2014, blockchain.com generated recovery phrases of around 16-20 words which were not BIP39 seed phrases but rather password recovery phrases.

It's worth mentioning that if OP recovers a wallet that uses legacy address type (those that begin with a 1...) in Electrum via the option of BIP39 mnemonic recovery words (be it 12 or 24 of them), the default native Segwit address type has to be changed to legacy with default derivation path m/44h/0h/0h (same as m/44'/0'/0').
