[Solved] Add a Moderator or Description to Beginners & Help board

Don't know how well this will sit with you all! (For the title of the thread I was a bit confused on what to title it)

But to Theymos, since you made the changes I suggested on this thread, [Solved] Dormant moderator; What do you guys think!

I feel like the beginner and help board seems weird without a mod assigned to it like others, look the imagine below. (If no mod is assigned to it specifically, at least a few words description like others will fill up that gap).




Also, I feel like some simple comments or post in the beginner and help board and bitcoin discussion board, needs 1 or 2 merits which they may not be getting because no merit source is assigned specifically to each of this board since you gave new merit source, some needs to be more concentrated on a specific board that will make a little bit of sense.

Have you made a lot of reports in the Beginners & Help section and they were left unhandled? Or did you open this thread just because you saw there were no listed board-specific moderators? If the reports haven't been looked into, theymos might consider appointing a new moderator, but just because you don't see a moderator name there doesn't mean the section isn't moderated. Admins and Global Moderators (and for Newbie's posts, Patrollers) can all handle reports.

If there are posts you think deserved merit but didn't receive any, feel free to list them and send a PM to me. If I find them suitable, I'll distribute merits.

IIRC it has been the same since I first registered on the forum, including on the Meta board. Of course, when you report a thread or post, it will eventually be handled by the global moderators.

Merit distribution still depends on the discretion and standards of the merit sources and other users. However, I personally think that merit sources should have as a requirement, a minimum number of sent merits per month, and per X board, in order to keep their merit source badge active.

"Bitcoin Discussion" and "Beginners & Help" boards are just like other boards. It's not that we have specific merit sources for each boards. As far as I know, only local boards have some specific merit sources.

According to DdmrDdmr's merit dashboard, 6.14% of total merits have been sent in "Bitcoin Discussion" and 4.26% of total merits have been sent in "Beginners & Help".
Do you still think not enough percentage of merits are distributed in these boards?

If I should be the one to answer your question as I do report often, most reports are handled and this board is one of them. Moderators are doing a good work as they also handle the report as fast as possible. What I think about this is that Churchillvv is not reporting unwanted posts which makes him not know how the reports are handled.

It's about topic title, and about your request, I believe you forgot that there are admins, global moderators and moderators, patrollers can handle reports. A board that does not have any assigned moderator under the board description does not mean it has no admins, global moderators, and moderators to take care of it and related reports.

That's right, change the title, OP, go on. Making a request to the forum administrator and writing the title incorrectly will not help them take you seriously. At the very least, you can easily correct the error by editing the title.

There are plenty of options for low-ranked members who post in that section to earn merit. I think the reason it doesn't have an assigned merit source is because it's not a board where people visit regularly, unlike the local boards. But merit sources do visit from time to time, and if anyone thinks there are posts that haven't received enough merit, there are threads to report them.

Alternatively, OP can post them in Report unmerited good posts to Merit Source. The board is even in English, so most Merit sources can read it.

So if I don't want to read certain posts, I could either lose my Merit source status, or just Merit a random post. That's not going to improve anything.

Regarding this concern, @EFS already explained the whole situation that I was going to write about actually. Once you report a post, it goes to global moderators, including all moderators, I believe. However, global moderators could visit and take action in all the boards.

Merit source is really not a paid job, and they aren't distributed for each board. But I can say most of the merit-deserved posts have been merited. I often visit that section, and I distribute merits to whoever deserves them. I admit some posts would be underestimated or not noticed by the merit source. Then you may link them on the reputation merit thread. Remember, all the users can merit on the post; it doesn't necessarily mean only the merit source will distribute their merits.

Boards will require urgent need for Mod if spam increases, looking at Beginners & Help section it is less full of spam topics. The board is an English board which means all Mods are assigned to the task already, including users to report suspicious discussions.

For merit distribution in Beginners section, assigning a merit source would help aside activeness from low ranked members, the board carries helpful informations, you can find Bitcoin discussion topics, Wallet discussion topics and also Guide topics which are merit worthy but unseen.

It's about topic title, and about your request, I believe you forgot that there are admins, global moderators and moderators, patrollers can handle reports. The thread title is misleading. It now made it look as if it was a request given by Theymos that he was trying to pass across.
The question to ask is, is the B&H board having issues that are associated with not having a moderator? The beginners and help board has been without a mod for a long as I have been here and I've still not seen it not function.

You've wiped my doubts off. I was actually on the sense that Op was 100% right considering there's no specified Moderator nor a Merit source there as literally obvious because sub board Mods were assumed to be obviously specified as per independent sub board in the forum according to the mindset just like others as Op may say.
But it's just too wrong to exergerate and blowing false alarm that the referenced sub board is left dormant on regulatory order just by the "eye service" while literally don't know there're dedicated official users filling the gaps there.
I'm of no doubt that this misconception happens to users who haven't reported a post from the board to see how effective it'll be responded before being skeptic. Perhaps I've earned merits from the "Beginners and Help" board and I also see flows of merits there as well. So it shouldn't be a worry or crave for the specification since the board keep to stay clean like every other boards with specified Moderator and merit sources.

That this forum is well recognized for being well moderated and yet we expect that there should be an important board like the beginners and help section left without moderation, people would have been tired of posting there and trolling could have been more higher there than the altcoins discussion or bounty sections.

This is just about seeing the appearance of the moderator being in charge of the board, but we don't have it visible the other boards are, he would have asked why the moderator in charge not showing as other boards, than coming to a conclusion of no moderation on the board.

As someone who actively reports for wrongly posted threads (B&H) and spam (rarely), all those reports were handled almost instantly so it's not like we have a backlog in the moderation in the mentioned section so we need a dedicated mod. With the current system it works perfectly fine.


@OP, all merit sources can merit any posts irrespective of what board it's made, it's just their interest to pick what to merit and what not to.

P.S. Edit the title as suggested because it changes the whole context.

I've also noticed that accurate reports are usually handled efficiently by global moderators including other moderators,  even in boards without assigned moderators. It shows that the report system does work though perhaps not always visibly to newer users, which might create confusion.

It will be helpful to users mostly newbies if they know that global moderators monitor reported posts even if no specific mod is assigned to the Beginner & Help section. That should give users more confidence in the system and reduce  worries.

Perhaps I acknowledge that reports are handled properly as it should be, the perspective in OP is that the small space which the name of a dormant moderator was in before hand is left open with a description nor a mods name and not necessarily that the board is unmoderated.

Would have loved to take responsibility of that, whoever, you would agree with me that if you are assigned to a specific board you will pay more attention to post in that board and see for your self little contributions or ideas could deserve a least 1 based on your perception. One thing that I seem to notice is that we are always tied to similar perception of things, only few things rational sometimes.

I'm not in support of that either, I just B&H and Bitcoin Discussion to be looked into more often as they are core grounds in the forum than LBs.

I'm not someone that doesn't listen to others opinion, however I agree with you that those boards get merits distributed accordingly. However since merit source job is voluntary, don't think assigning some of those new merit sources to a specific board is going to work based on what some are saying here.

Your opinion is very much valid, I appreciate them but this is not really about low-ranked members, they have multiple threads to seek for merits. It's about a little bit of more attention paid to those important board not by moderators but merit source just like the attentions served in local boards.

Good you admit to it! however, I will see if I can do the job of gathering comments or posts that I believe deserve little merit, especially those that may be skipped or unnoticed.
Although I'm always busy with college activities yet will find time for that if possible.

Definitely would but seems since it's a voluntary job, according to LoyceV no one is paid for the job so no bossy assignment should be given.

Of course, it's merit source's discretion to give merit on what posts, my point is there should be number of merits given on X number of boards, not what OP says of 1-2 merits per post/comments/thread on such boards mentioned.

Before I lock this thread and edit it to [ Solved].

These thread served as a reminder to theymos to add a moderator to Beginners and Help board which in the op the image shows the difference now. Mitchell is and has always been moderating the board since the absence of miningbuddy.

It’s also obvious the difference in the board since Mitchell resumed moderation there it has become more moderated than before.

Even though credit wasn’t given by theymos for the observation yet I believe it was worth it. And thanks to LoyceV for your suggestion on what to title the thread.

Sorry to bump this topic.

I just want to say props to Mitchell, I like how he post a redirection when he move a thread and also a reason if he move the thread to trashcan. So, the OP and the users who post the thread know the reason why the thread was deleted.

Having a post redirection topic also make me know where the topic moved, usually if I see a thread in Bitcoin Discussion, then after few hours I don't see the thread in that board anymore, which takes time for me to find the thread.
