Would a Decentralized Social Media Platform Be a Good Idea?

Greetings folks
So After some argument with my friends about what if a decentralised social media platform was created? it' lead me to write on this topic to get all your opinions
So it's certain that we are all aware the utility that bitcoin offers  because of it decentralised nature and how it has served us in various ways .like freedom from traditional banking issues, as a store of value and other things that we all have benefitted from bitcoin but what if one day some group of developers come up with an idea to creates a decentralised social media platform would it be a bad idea or not?. What actually caused our argument was actually the issue  that occurred in our country in the year 2021 when government indefinitely banned twitter operations in our country Nigeria am sure most folks here would still remember

So on the bright side the ideal of a decentralised social media platform that isn't run or controlled by any company or Authority would offer us untility that we deserve and it won't be possible for any government to just order it to be taken offline .

Benefit of decentralised social media D Social

Freedom of speech and expression : it will give us the right to speak on our opinion on political issues, corrupt government and economic issues.with out any fear of our social media account being deleted.
Personal control: just like bitcoin we would have control over our data not the platform and it would ensure our privacy because our personal information cannot be taken from us with out our consent.
Reduce any risk of hack : the ideal of our data not being centralised will definitely reduce the issue of hackers targeting our data.
A direct payment:by using a block chain technology on a Platform it would allow for the use of peer to peer transaction payments for contents , artist , writers Influencers and many more .
The Financial inclusion:our country Nigeria has a significant unbanked population and with a decentralised social media platform will act a way of opening a digital economy where by people can earn and spend crypto through the platform . fostering more adoption and financial inclusion.

Further more Nigeria developer could build a decentralised app dapp on top of the new open source protocol and with a significant population of tech savvy youths in our country it will really lead to development of new technology in our country but according to what my guys said they say not every one is a tech literate and dey might not understand the technology that it won't be possible for it to gain wind adoption and that if there is no centralised authority there might be a lot of fake news which I actually disagree on so what do you think is a decentralised social media platform a good ideal or not but remember just as bitcoin we should also look on the bright side of things.

Anybody willing to do this will have to make some sacrifices... Take for example, most social media platforms collect your data and sell to third party companies for money... That is why they are able to give you personalized ads based on your search history and activities and that is basically where the bulk of their money comes from.. but with a decentralized input, this will not be possible as users will have direct control over their data... The company will not make as much money. However there are other things that they can do to make money.. for me, the benefits outweighs the cons.. so I see it ac something that we should have and make use of. I think there are a few of them already available in the web3 space.
   
. but ht will be hard to get rid of other social apps like Instagram,Facebook,TikTok as they have already been available for a long period of time and they have captured the audience so much...

Nigeria government can be evil sometimes but this is going to be very hard to achieve. I remember back in 2020 when APC government ban Twitter and we have to make use of vpn to be able to access the platform, it was like for 2 years before they later removed the ban.

I have some reasons why this can't work and here they are:

1. Inability to connect with close friends: what'sapp and Facebook for example is one of the largest place you can connect with people, you just need to have their numbers and connect with them. Decentralized social will not really work because even the centralized ones like don't have people that used them. People prefer to use something they can connect easily, like TikTok and the rest.

2. creative contact revenue: Social media like X which is now Twitter pay verified users every month for creating contents and articles, TikTok has a way it works and pay people through gifts. These alone will make people stay glued to centralized social media.

3. Market and Ads: It's very easy for people to want to advertise on centralized social media because of the population. People will not advertise on this platforms and without revenue, the platform will not be alive to serve people. The developers will need money to keep it live.

I understand that we have poor data management and law here in Nigeria but we are not dictatorship country where we need a decentralized social media, this is a democracy where we all have freedom and our right

As things stands, there is no information that you wish to push out to the public that you can not push out regardless of it form. if you can not post it on Facebook, you can post in on X (twitter). if you can not post it on most of them, you can still post in on a blog website and either way, the information will still get to the public domain.

Twitter (X) came as what would have seen to be a completely decentralized platform but it is still paying it price because there is to an extent a reduction in revenue as a result of that. Also, a completely decentralized system that the government can not control has it own disadvantage because it can be easily used to incite war and chaos in a nation as ours. knowing how fragile we are by reason of our coexistence as a nation, there should be a level of regulation in all spheres of our dealing with things or else, we end up trapping ourselves into becoming an ungovernable nation.

We have a lot of talents in this country and they are ever willing to contribute their best efforts towards achieving this development for the benefits of the people, but if you look at the past history on various innovations and ideas and see why some were left unattended to after a several years of attempting to fully launch, we can see that in Nigeria here, finance is one of the main challenges to seeing this become a reality, because the government or not considering opportunities from this aspect and the few selected influential figures and leaders are not also interested on this sector of technology development, because for any reasonable achievements, it requires a constant funding and a team to ensure success is achieved.

so what do you think is a decentralised social media platform a good ideal or not but remember just as bitcoin we should also look on the bright side of things.

This is possible to get, but I don't think the challenges of creating a dapp and the protocols involved were streamlined towards having a decentralized exchange, because if you have a more closer look on some of these networks, they are centralized together with their developers or teams which controls them, except the idea of the use of blockchain technology and is fully involved, we should also understand the difference between this social media platforms and forum like bitcointalk which is more decentralized, if we can acheive the same with social media which I merely think impossible to, but it's going to be a lot of efforts to achieve as success.
