If business owners, taxi owners, hotel owners and others who claim to be working for themselves need to depend on customers and customer satisfaction for profit, that is to be able to get money from them, are they really working for themselves?
Maybe the people who are actually working for themselves are those who do not need people or to satisfy any customer to make profit, example like the traders who do not need to lure customers to their shop like business owners or hotel owners, or taxi owner that need to follow instructions from their clients etc.
What could be the real definition of working for yourself?
Self-employment means working for yourself. If you want to earn money, you must get it by providing services to others. You are self-employed, meaning you are doing your own work. When you work under someone, you have to follow certain rules and you are responsible for any mistake you make to your company boss. But when you drive a taxi or own a hotel, you will provide a service yourself with your freedom. If you don't feel like driving a taxi today, you can easily take a vacation without making any request to anyone. But if you do the same work under a company, then you will have to be very accountable for your absence one day. Self-employment does not mean that you cannot provide services to others. Self-employment refers to the situation where you earn money by providing services to others according to your freedom.
