Funding of bitcoin project

I have a project under sketching that there is a very need of in general within the bitcoin and e-currency ecosystem. But I just don't wanna come from "now where" and ask for donations. Could you tell if you donated before and what made you donate? How should I present it thrustworthy if parts of the projects technology must be held within the projectteam.

I am assembling a team of volenters and paid developers, so to make sure there will be progression donation will be important.

Any advice from people collected donations and given donations are appreciated.
