It's obvious and easy to see differences and compare all products on their website, but they only looking similar from the outside.
In short, Satochip is a hardware wallet for making transactions, and Satodime is more like physical bitcoin aka the bearer cold storage.
https://satochip.io/compare/

Yes, I saw this comparison. The difference is only in the use value.
The hardware differences interest me. As far as I can see, both solutions use the same EAL6-certified secure element, so it seems it's just a matter of software.

In terms of hardware, there is no difference. Each product uses the same J3Rxxx smart card equipped with an EAL6+ certified chip (SE).

Satochip is a signing device, which means that it can sign a transaction using the unique private key stored inside its SE.
Satodime is not a signing device. It can generate a Bitcoin key pair (up to 3) inside its SE and will only reveal the private key if requested by the bearer. If you want te retreive the Bitcoin from a Satodime, you'll have to unseal the keyslot and sweep the private key in your existing wallet.

Same hardware - different products - different use cases.

First off, cool project. I definitely want to try this out.

I'm curious - what is the exact model of the cards, j3r110, j3r150, j3r180? Do you mind disclosing where you get them from? The reason I ask is, I've been looking at these for a couple of days and find the whole smart card landscape quite confusing. As far as I can tell, the j3xxx cards use NXP P71D321 chip/secure element. However, are the cards themselves manufactured by NXP? They're sold as such by some sellers (e.g. Cardlogix) but I can't find a single mention of these cards on NXP's website. So I'm a little worried about the source - is there a way to make sure the hardware is actually genuine?

Am I imagining things or what?  Didn't there used to be a whole bunch of Satochip designs available not too long ago?  Assuming I'm not going out of my mind, what happened to them all?

I love both the Satochip and Satodime, even with the (minor) encumbrance of needing to have a smartcard reader, which is the only way I'll use mine.

I also like the possibility of supporting several other altcoins. I wish to have such an option in the coming years.

Having bitcoin and litecoin support is great.  BCH and ETH I couldn't care less about--I would absolutely go ga-ga if either card supported numerous other coins and not just tokens on another blockchain.  I'm a tech idiot, so I don't even know if that's possible.  In any case, the Satochip has become, albeit slowly over the past few years, my favorite HW wallet.  There's so much about most of the others on the market that I don't trust--especially that nicely-engineered spyware device known as the Ledger.  Don't get me started.

I like the Opsec design and may have to buy one.

Too many requests for a card with nothing on it. No logos, no hints — just pure privacy. 🕵️‍♂️
So here it is…
This is great as stealthy hardware wallet, but I guess we could achieve similar results with blank cards and loading Satochip code ourselves Wink

Another option for people who don't want to spend more money if they already have Satochip card is to buy dark color card stickers and stick them on their cards.

PS
Tibu, what is your opinion about new Keycard Shell hardware wallet?

Am I imagining things or what?  Didn't there used to be a whole bunch of Satochip designs available not too long ago?  Assuming I'm not going out of my mind, what happened to them all?
This were Special Edition cards only.
If there is enough interest from people Satochip can make them again.

The requirement is 25 cards for custom design. They distributed all the other "special edition" designs, so only the default one is currently available. I bought it as a gift, and I wish I could have had a more unique card. It would be great if you had such a possibility to add custom designs even when we don't need 25 such cards.

Currently, we are using J3R180 smartcard from NXP. We cannot disclose our supply chain for many good reasons. And yes, the smartcard ecosystem is a real jungle. Too many products, too many vendors, not that much quality in the product sold. It's quite complex to navigate in this field.
As for the "genuine" check, each card is signed with our certificate and you can check the authenticity of the card by yourself using our PKI.

Use the dedicated application (mobile or desktop), go to the setting and you should find a button to check the card authenticity.

The Keycard Shell is wonderful. Having a detachable secure element based on an affordable smartcard, usable with a screen, is genius.
I really like the project and hope it gets the recognition it deserves.

I am really interested to see how it is going to work, and I wonder if they Keycard Shell will be compatible with other cards (including Satochip).
I actually asked them that question with few others but I didn't receive any answer from them yet.
Maybe both of your companies can work together on some future project.

Def, it would be great to get Satochip compatible with the Shell device.

It's great to hear you already had talks with Keycard team!
Since software for all your products is basically open source, I see good reasons for this to happen.
Please keep us updated if anything changes in good direction, I am interested in testing this myself.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MuSig2
A proof of concept
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What's MuSig2

It’s a multi-signature scheme for #Bitcoin based on Schnorr signatures.
Think of it as an upgrade to how multiple parties sign transactions — faster, lighter, and more private. 🔐

Unlike traditional multi-sig (e.g., m-of-n), MuSig2 lets multiple signers create one single aggregated signature.
On-chain, it looks like a regular signature. No one can tell it's multi-sig. 🤫

It’s non-interactive (after key setup), minimizes bandwidth, and is compatible with Taproot.
That’s a big deal for scaling, privacy, and efficiency.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Advantages of MuSig2

MuSig2 has some serious benefits over classic multisig:

✅ Compact: One signature
✅ Private: Hides signer info
✅ Efficient: Fewer communication rounds

It works perfectly with Taproot, taking advantage of Bitcoin’s latest upgrade to enhance smart contract logic and privacy
Also: It reduces transaction fees—critical for apps, exchanges, and high-volume users.

Security + privacy + lower cost = a big win.
That’s MuSig2 in a nutshell. 🔐🚀

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Satochip — 1st smartcard wallet to support MuSig2

Satochip is breaking new ground:
It’s the first hardware smartcard wallet actively working on MuSig2 support.

Youtube link: https://youtu.be/KNhIsin0HdU

Why’s that big?

Smartcards have strict security and performance constraints. Supporting MuSig2 shows it’s not just a concept — it works even in highly secure, limited environments.
This unlocks secure multi-party signing on tamper-resistant cards — ideal for institutions, custody services, or even individuals who want maximum security.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's talk integration

You are a mobile wallet dev? You build your own multi-sig application?
Let's talk and see how we can collaborate to bring you smartcards with MuSig support into your solutions.

👇

The implementation is available on our github:
* [Satochip firmware withMuSig2 support](https://github.com/Toporin/SatochipApplet/tree/musig2-support)
* [Satochip firmware diff with the new code](https://github.com/Toporin/SatochipApplet/compare/schnorr-support...musig2-support)

Great extension product was released for Satochip, and this can combine Seedsigner device with Satochip cards.
For the price of €60 we are getting dual slots smartcard hat for Seedsigner, black 3D printed case, and DIY smartcard.
If you already own Raspberry Pi Zero you can can create really secure hardware wallet setup, similar like Keycard Shell.
