Hello,

I am really concerned, I did not make any changes to electrum and today, suddenly, it asked me whether I wanted to connect to servers automatically or manually, my preferences were also removed. I don't have any viruses, does this usually happen? I am on a old version of electrum 4.4.6

Thank you

In short, it's best to update your Electrum version to the latest version immediately. Maintaining an older version is not recommended due to compatibility issues or other unpatched vulnerabilities.
By the way, are you using the mobile or desktop version?

I am using both mobile and desktop Electrum wallet, none has requested me to connect to a server before, all has been set when I was importing my wallet or when I created a wallet.

Maybe it happened because he is using the old version. It would be better for him to update to version 4.6.2 which is the latest.

Hello,

I downloaded Electrum from the Electrum.org website (official) back in 2023, on 26th August.

Due to recent topics on reddit mentioning malware etc, I decided to scan the installer.

It came back with RiskWare/Win32.Kryptik.a from Antiy-AVL.

Please can someone confirm if this is a false positive or should I be concerned? I also have Norton 360 but that didn't pick up anything.

Thank you in advance.

Your wallet preference can't disappear all of a sudden. Maybe your anti virus did you dirty.

OP can you confirm if you still have anti-virus on your computer. Maybe anti virus might have deleted your elelctrrum configuration. Check your electrum folder if the wallet configuration is still available or it's deleted from your electrum folder.

In short, it's best to update your Electrum version to the latest version immediately. Maintaining an older version is not recommended due to compatibility issues or other unpatched vulnerabilities.
By the way, are you using the mobile or desktop version?

OP is running old version for some reasons, he used win32 bit device, the new version of electrum might not be compatible with his device.

Thanks all for the replies.

I updated windows yesterday, and I suspect it maybe that, but why would Windows interfere with my Electrum files?

Unfortunately, I already launched electrum and selected automatically for the server and the config file has been created today.

I am using a desktop version on Windows.

Just to add, I have Malwarebytes and Norton 360 -- both of which I have been using for over 1+ year.

This doesn't necessarily mean interfering; as mentioned earlier, it could be a compatibility issue. Electrum isn't designed to withstand major OS updates in Windows, as it doesn't store settings in the protected registry or paths esp. /AppData/Roaming where Electrum's configuration is stored. That's why using the latest version is recommended.

In my experience (with Electrum always up-to-date), AV shouldn't interfere with Electrum.

suddenly, it asked me whether I wanted to connect to servers automatically or manually,
One thing: that prompt will pop-up if "auto_connect" isn't set in your config file or the actual "config" file is missing.

Given that, if your wallet(s) are in the default location and not affected, it's just your config file that's somehow deleted.
Not much of an issue if you remember your settings since it looks like not caused by Electrum.
If everything is missing, it has something to do with the whole electrum datadir.

This info will be useful for you to deduce what happened:
  • Electrum's config, default wallet directory and other datadir files are stored in your %appdata%/electrum folder if you're using the "installer" (setup) or "stand-alone" version of electrum.
  • On the other hand, if you're using the "portable" version, its saved in "electrum_data" folder in the same directory where the portable executable is.

The wallet would be affected if the whole datadir is missing unless the wallet file is on another directory.

Just to add, I have Malwarebytes and Norton 360 -- both of which I have been using for over 1+ year.
The config just contains JSON encoded Electrum settings, it's highly unlikely that an AV would flag it.
