Leader of the pro-independence movement Raffaele Serafini maintained that the region of Veneto has been colonised by Italy since 1866. Serafini also said he supported Crimea joining the Russian Federation.

The region of Veneto proclaimed the Veneta Republic on March 21 after an online poll held from March 16 to 21 obtained an absolute majority.
