It is basically a new gtld (like a new form of .com, .net, etc) that is being sold to the general public but has high costs and no established market history. It is deemed by news outlets as a place where some cybersquatters have rushed to buy up domains, and register them with trademarked names. For instance, Nike.clothing.

re: cybersquatting brands so have the ability to buy them before the general public, and it is illegal to infringe on trademarks so not sure the first example is a good one, but smaller companies with some brand are struggling to keep their brand.
The new TLDs are causing quite a stir especially with people who have huge .com portfolios since it is a conflict of their interests.
Simply put people don't know how the new TLDs will fare in search results such as google, despite what some people may say, however, they have been popular.
Either way there is the ability to get some very interesting new domains!
