Copying UTXOs from one altcoin to another?

I need to know how to copy the UTXO of a pre-forked alt to a post-forked one. To explain, I'm switching the codebase of an altcoin, and want to see if it is possible to take the original test-alt and switch it to another coin's base code. For example, say Bitcoin has to swap to scrypt. How would they do it without people losing ALL of their coins? A UTXO import. So, my only question is: How? How can I take the UTXO from the original, mined, transacted coin and import it into the new algorithm coin?
