Ive been into the altcoin market for a while now. Initially it was seen as a 'lost cause' and 'non profitable'
but hey, that's exactly what they said about bitcoin.

Ive never invested actually dollars into altcoins but i've traded with them via bitcoin and collected free handouts when coins first started up.
The profit yield is rather high now. At the time 100s of 1 coin would be worth like 1 dollar if cashed out to bitcoin then into your home currency, now its something like 100 bucks. All for free.

The point I want to bring up is the complete irrelevance of the value of the altcoin at the moment. The only thing that matters is staying consistent. I mean, don't get me wrong, it would be great if the value on certain coins would shoot up the way that bitcoin did, but perhaps anti-productive..

Say your altcoin is worth 0.001 btc. The value doesn't need to go up in order for it to be valuable. The price of bitcoin just needs to go up (which it probably will) and as long as it keeps the current value of 1coin/0.001btc the value still goes up.

Remember- its all psychological. If people support a coin- it will hold value. Keep interest in the coin long enough for the price of bitcoin to go up, and you may have just made a good amount of money.
