I wonder if it is possible to make a new coin that is truly CPU-only for mining, and there's something about it that GPUs or ASICs cannot mine.

I think about the early days of Bitcoin, when I could have had 50 computers CPU hashing it for me, if only I had known about Bitcoin at that time.  I'd like a second chance, even though I have a dozen GPUs hashing other X11 coins for me now.

Any CPU coin I start working on has to have something unique about it so that GPUs cannot mine it at all, and it has to be profitable for me, becasue without profit it is pointless to mine at all.

What can be done to a coin algorithm so a GPU can't mine it?

You can't realy get 2nd chance, when bitcoin allready happened, everything else is pure imitation, with rarely something new to offer.
I also have x11 rigs, which i didnt want to sell just yet, but i swap all funds to btc & ltc, and advise others to do the same.
If u pay better attention to the market you'l see that even btc nd ltc are barely keeping their heads above the water, meaning that any new coin is definetly going to bust , after p&d masters are done with them.

As far as pure-cpu coins are concerned, you can allways recompile the miner to mine it with gpu's as far as i know.
cheers

I dont think CPU only coins is possible, but it is possible to make GPU-coins only..

The irony with that is if a coin is cpu only initially, it will eventually be gpu mined eventually. As all these latest gpu's have nearly the same core technology of a cpu, plus the graphics acceleration. ie. AMD 7xxx's series, AMD R series, Nvidia 750 series, up coming Nvidia 8xx series, etc....

It is probably not possible. GPUs are just computers. Anything a CPU can do, a GPU can also do.

There are coins that narrow the gap though, usually by reducing the degree of parallelism (the greatest advantage of GPUs), relying on memory latency (where GPUs aren't any better than CPUs), or relying on special hardware (for example AES encryption) that exists in CPUs but not GPUs. Or some combination of all of these.

Take a look at the Cryptonote coins (the most popular by far is Monero). Although there are GPU miners, they aren't really much (if any) faster than CPUs after adjusting for cost and power usage. CPUs are at least competitive.

Memorycoin also has a relatively small gap between CPU mining and GPU mining (about 2x).

If if you could make CPU only coin even then they can be mined by botnets and Amazon clouds . I would prefer a GPU coin that can be mined by many people as compared to CPU which is easy target for botnets and people having access to large server farms.

i know your feel, those big farm make gpu like asic, not much of a different anymore, but botnet coin aren't exacctly better

just limit the damn hash like minerals did, and all problem will be solved

Agree, we need someone to come out with ASIC proof coins..

Whenever some coin will become more profitable and will have larger market cap , then its good opportunity for Asic makers to exploit the market. Same thing happened with BTC,  and then LTC followed the same league . Unfortunately Asics are inevitable and hard forking a coin to another algo is the solution.
