I was just thinking that ironically maybe big news of bitcoins getting stolen isn't so bad for bitcoin in general.

It shows that bitcoins have value, that they are actually worth stealing. At the very least it raises curiosity as to how hacking can yield real cash gains without law enforcement being able to look into it.

Bitcoins have been stolen way before the latest problem with Linode. User name (can't remember spelling -- something like "Alvarin") had 25k stolen not too long ago, MyBitcoin, A1Bitcoin, and many, many smaller scams involving good/service/loan transactions unfulfilled.

Have sneaking suspicion that competent hackers lured into Bitcoin by financial gain through unethical means probably aren't the kind of folks who'd be appreciated by BTC community. I switched to Armory this morning for easy management of offline wallets after reading about what's happened, so that's something positive -- for me, anyway.  Smiley

lol..I was just thinking this morning how easy it would be to move a large sum of bitcoins and make up a story about how they got stolen for a publicity stunt.

I'm grumpy!!

All publicity is good publicity. Hard to tell if this is the case here. Many will think, Bitcoins are not safe. But it will increase their media exposure and also as said, if they are worth stealing they are worth having.

ironic choice of name.

Introducing constraints to the economy only serves to limit what can be economical.
