Coinbase, a United States based Bitcoin exchange, will be waiving its processing fees to any non-profit organization that does business with the exchange, according to Coindesk. This news came from Coinbase From the Coinbase blog post regarding their decision to waive fees for non-profit partners:
We’re excited to announce that the Wikimedia Foundation is now accepting bitcoin donations and has chosen Coinbase as its preferred bitcoin payment processor. The Wikimedia Foundation is a non-profit organization that distributes free educational content and operates some of the largest collaboratively edited reference projects worldwide, including Wikipedia. Using Coinbase, the Wikimedia Foundation is able to instantly exchange bitcoin for U.S. dollars… The Internet has made it easier for non-profits to operate by enabling them to increase geographic reach and reduce the overhead required to fundraise. Adding bitcoin as a donation option is a natural next step for non-profits because it eliminates one of the most significant costs remaining —payment processing fees. In response, we’re proud to announce zero processing fees for all registered non-profits accepting bitcoin through our merchant tools.
The blog post also reiterated that Coinbase’s decision to waive processing fees for non-profits means that those organizations who are partnered with Coinbase will be able to immediately convert their Bitcoin donations into fiat currency—if they wish—and receive a daily bank transfer for their funds, for free.
The blog post also highlights Coinbase’s belief that charity is an important aspect of spreading Bitcoin acceptance across the globe. Noting Bitcoin’s ability to send funds with virtually no transaction fees, Coinbase stated that charitable giving acts as a significant opportunity to amass a consumer base:
Charitable giving is emerging as a major consumer use case for bitcoin. Bitcoin enables donors to give 100% of their funds to causes they care about, and the convenience of bitcoin has inspired donors to donate small amounts when they previously might not have donated at all. U.S. donors may also enjoy significant tax deductions based on their bitcoin-denominated donations.

Coinbase’s decision to offer free payment processing definitely opens up the opportunity to get more non-profit organizations to use Bitcoin. Already having tax exempt status with the IRS, non-profits only have to worry about expenses and transfer costs. While Bitcoin cannot exactly cut down on expenses—except for perhaps doing so through its deflationary nature—the virtually costless transactions on the Bitcoin networkcan drastically reduce the expense of transporting money internationally to people that the charities are trying to help. Therefore, the free payment processing by Coinbase could definitely encourage organizations who are not directly linked to Bitcoin to consider using it to accept donations—and possibly even use it for their work as well, instead of immediately converting it to fiat. If a substantial amount of charities and other non-profit organizations begin using Bitcoin, it could potentially strengthen the demand for Bitcoin in general.
