how to get avalon technobit to work with gentoo?

I have a technobit miner that has the a3255-o48 avalon chips on it (I believe they are avalon 2)

Gentoo is normally a snap, but I can't get sgminer to recognize the device

error -> No Devices Found!

when cgminer is launched

I loaded the avalon and avalon2 flags in make.conf and reinstalled cgminer (this worked like an ace with butterfly labs)
