Question about having another monitor

I recently just got a monitor for my laptop.  Setting things up were simple enough.  However, I can't seem to get the following done:

Show desktop on the 2nd display and also be able to use the laptop display.  Whenever I show desktop on 2nd display, the laptop display is void.

Right now the desktop is shown on laptop display and windows can be dragged to monitor display.

Right click on desktop and click screen resolution. Then click on your desktop display and tick "Make this my main display".

I don't get the problem, either. You're saying, you want an extended desktop (not just the content cloned to the external display) but when you connect the external display, your notebook monitor goes black?

He is saying that the start menu bar is on the laptop display and he wants it swapped to be on the monitor display.

Now click extend displays. Now I assume the problem will be that your laptop has the start menu instead of the monitor. To fix that, you need to click on the screen that you want to have a start menu (in the graphics properties window) and then tick "make this my main display".

But you want it so that the desktop is shown on the monitor display and windows can be dragged onto the laptop display, right?

Having a big big monitor is much better then mutiple..

I don't think so. Having one big monitor means that you can't put programs into full screen mode of you want them to run side by side. Instead you need to make them windowed and you waste some space sometimes.

Well get Windows 8, it is unbelievably easier to do what you want. You can choose laptop screen, second screen, or both.

Or he could just create a second partition and install windows 8 on that. Windows 8 will then create a boot-loader able to boot windows 7 or windows 8! I am actually doing a tutorial in media class at my school on this.

Not true. Big screens usually have the same full HD resolution, so you don't get much real work space, just enlarge everything.
If you're a gamer you'll need a second screen to be able to play on full screen and still see things like chat or bitcoin ticker Big screen won't help here.

Having 3 large high resolution screens is best. I'm working with two at the moment. 24" 1920x1200 and 24" 1920x1080. Adding a third 24" 1920x1080 since it's far cheaper than adding a 30" 2560x1440.

I have a 24" and 27" really nice to work on. I found that it's a bit better to game on the 24" while 27" is more useful for movies
The ideal setup for me would be 2x 24" for work and gaming and a 32" movie screen.
