BTCJam wants me to strike a pose with my driver's license, which isn't going to happen.  If I don't need to do it to open an online banking account, then I shouldn't need to do it to register for BTCJam.

Aha, my BTC Jam account:

Actually, I'd prefer to do this through BTCJam, but I'm hesitant to accost a friend or some bum on the side of the road to strike a pose.  Ideas?

I fail to understand the logic. Opening a bank account to deposit and withdraw money is completely different from people voluntarily pitching in to fill your loan requirement. Its on the basis of trust without any collateral. Having a mug shot with you holding your license is a convenient method of avoiding someone using a stolen license and avoiding impersonations.

$4000 bucks is a lot with no guarantee... projects like this are what banks are for at the end of the day, so that you the borrower assume liability for the loan rather than some stranger over the Internet....
