This why I urge people take a good look @ Gridcoin. The computations that are done on the BOINC network have real world implications for pretty much every human being on the planet.

Why not just do BOINC calculations without being selfish?

Great news.

However, I'd never invest in Gridcoin. It's basically a charity fund. I know it's a noble cause, but gridcoin as a cryptocurrency doesn't offer anything over all other altcoins.

That is a pretty narrow-minded view. By participating in Gridcoin and creating an economy around it you are giving incentive for many other people to join in that otherwise will never dedicate computer resources to Boinc projects!!! On top of that, people who run GPU farms have quite hefty power bills each month, so mining a cryptocurrency offsets that! Boinc has been around for 10 years, you would think everyone with a computer would have joined in considering the real world implications of Boinc work, but that is not that case!! Because people get bored, they forget, or they just simply don't care because there are so many other distractions in real life that take up their time. Now when you throw in a monetary incentive in to the mix all the sudden all those people who had no time or weren't interested for whatever reason are now much more willing to participate!! NOT participating in Gridcoin is selfish! Do you see my point?

I'm astonished too. What more could one want in a coin?  Mine Grc, make money, cure cancer and other maladies. That is putting energy to good use.
You have to love Grc, Pink, Earthcoin, plus others who give back in various ways.
I'm not a bagholder of any of these coins but I should be.

That's an eye-catching headline, traderman. Nice find!

I've been a BOINC regular for years, always hoping one of my machines would make a world-changing difference.
It feels good to try and help "do something" about the research issues of the day.

More recently, I've mined GRC regularly - even used GRC proceeds to help buy BTC ASIC miners sometimes.
Now that BTC is ASIC-only, GRC fills a very useful niche for 'puter mining.

It's not my only alt coin, but it's definitely a fave and I endorse it without reservation, fwiw.

I see your points, but as long as Gridcoin doesn't add anything new/different for it's users (as a currency), it's not going to succeed as a cryptocurrency. So when you're buying this coin you're rewarding/donating to BOINC 'miners', and that's the only current thing that Gridcoin has going for it. So even though this is a great project, I wouldn't consider buying GRC as an investment.

Mining Gridcoin today wouldn't be profitable either, so there's no real monetary incentive, you're just getting a discount on participating in a charity project. If the monetary incentive is what you're after, you wouldn't mine Gridcoin, but something that's actually profitable. I'd only mine Gridcoin if I was going to do BOINC anyway.

PS, I did BOINC for about half a year back in 2010/2011 (Dutch Power Cows Smiley). Eventually stopped because of the noise and power costs.
