It is not because of the algorithm or the amount of GHs, but because of market fluctuation that Scrypt mining profitability lowers or increases. As long as the altcoin market sticks to Bitcoin and then to fiat, every coin will suffer from its variations.

Also, I have experience with both, mining and trading, one has to do both in order to have better returns, and you don't have to be a great speculator, just stick to the easy to predict ups and downs, like when difficulty changes or when there is strong pressure up/down, basic trading rules.
