A new Finnish project is about to accomplish its ambitious mission within the Bitcoin ecosystem: the Koodilehto KryptoRadio project wants to broadcast Bitcoin-related transactional data around the world using digital television transmissions or, in other words, Digital Video Broadcasting – Terrestrial (DVB-T) networks.

I guess it's similar to time-server WWVB, but of course a lot of data compared to a simple time signal. Wonderful if it comes to fruition.

Ultimately, KryptoRadio’s idea could even improve the Bitcoin network. This means the cryptocurrency’s blockchain would not be dependent on the Internet to transmit block data.
^^^This = Wow!

That would be huge. Being able to use bit coin when the internet is down has been a pretty well covered topic here. We need a couple more avenues to have true redundancy in the network.

Prior to clicking on the link (based only on the OP), I was picturing people sitting in front of their TV watching something similar to the live updates on the front page of blockchain.info and that didn't seem very exciting. Having the Bitcoin network active even without the internet is an epic step forward.

Strange none of the radio fanatics have not picked up on this yet? {Or have they done this, and I just missed it?}

Well redundency is a good thing. Bitcoin in space.  Grin

I was amazed to see, how little hosts were running around the world, for such a huge network. Should people running hosts not be rewarded, to increase the number?

I have a friend who is really into radio, and now Bitcoin as well.  I discussed this idea with him (before the news article), and he was quite interested, but he is concerned that the community as a whole would take issue because they have a strict "no encrypted data" policy.  I know the data itself is not encrypted, but he was concerned that data that uses encryption of any sort might be not accepted.  This is probably just another education issue and I think the community would be interested if they understood it better.

This is a great idea, anyone can pick up the transmission so it could encourage wider Bitcoin adoption. Countries with low internet connectivity could really benefit. Could there be any security issues though?

How would you connect to the blockchain using Digital Video Broadcasting?

One thing in the article that seems hypocritical is this quote:
Quote
There has been many attempts to make Bitcoin less dependent of the public Internet. (…) One approach is to use Tor network to hide Bitcoin traffic from the public Internet. Unfortunately this does not make Bitcoin more accessible to new users. The better approach is to go beyond Internet and use public infrastructure for broadcasting transactions of the Bitcoin network.

I don't see how this new Digitial Video Broadcasting could be any easier than Tor. I don't even know how I would connect to this new DVB technology. Users will probably need a special device, right? I could at least figure out Tor if I wanted to and it wouldn't require additional hardware.

This proposed technology seems even more specialized.

That aside, the actual redundancy is a great idea and we should have as many redundant copies of the Bitcoin network covering Earth as possible.

Update - If they can fit the data-stream in a 7.5kbps channel. Then instead of only broadcasting in UHF line of site. They could broadcast on SW/LW/MW over digital AM to much larger regions from a single transmitter using Digital Radio Mondiale technology.

Amazing project, this means Bitcoin without internet. Bitcoin may proceed on one's way in any case.
