I don't think the media is saying that bitcoin is in any way responsible for the hack/disbursement of the photos. Apple is the one who is responsible for not having good enough security (or tailored security) for people who would have their security questions easily guessed. The media is reporting that bitcoin is being used to profit from the hack, but also that the hacker is not profiting in the way he hoped to.
