You can purchase Bitcoins from Bitcoin exchanges. You don't need to rely on Bitcoin companies. And here is a list of all the Bitcoin exchanges around the world, including the currently inactive ones:

I don't think an exhaustive list of companies exists.

Something easy is to go to http://www.bitcoinity.org and check the sites it has listed for each currency. It shows each by highest volume.
