Basically, the question is stated in the subject of topic: what is more money-efficient, to rent 100 dedicated servers or to buy 100 CPUs?

I'm talking about mining with a CPU-only algorithm (say, scrypt-N or scrypt-jane).

Well, I believe there are CPU-only algorithms (though I cannot provide an example(XPM?)). Imagine a CPU-only coin. What about answering the question?

Very few CPU only coins, and to answer your question easiest would be Amazon AWS if you can rent at a price that is profitable to mine the coin.

Riecoin is one of the few cpu-only coins out there.  Also gapcoin and magicoin.  XPM is gpu territory.

None of these coins are profitable to mine unless you have under-the-table renting deals, cheap / free electricity, or some other means of skirting the normal costs of mining.
