Last week Ittay Eyal published an interesting paper on using a block withholding attack against open mining pools as a means for generating a larger return for the attacker: http://hackingdistributed.com/2014/12/03/the-miners-dilemma/

An earlier presentation turns out to have highlighted the same concept: http://de.slideshare.net/MartinKppelmann/miningwars

I thought it would be interesting to run my usual sort of statistical look at this and think about some implications since neither of the others actually showed the numerical gains to an attacker, the losses to victims or the impact (wins) for everyone else: http://hashingit.com/analysis/36-pool-wars
