... it can also have a real negative effect on actual legitimate currency.

Example. People were bulk-buying AMD GPUs using bitcoins, as they were cheap. What happened? AMD GPU prices in USD/GBP/whatever other REAL currency there are, skyrocketed. I'm sure that's great for AMD and bitcoin users, but it's bad for everyone else.

Here we see one reason why a gamer in particular might harbour ill-feeling for Bitcoin.  Over the past few years, miners have competed with gamers for graphics cards, pushing up prices in the short-term.  Of course, gamers are not excluded from the general observation that almost all adults are completely clueless when it comes to basic economic principles.  This simple case of supply and demand quickly drives the hapless individual to an absurd conclusion.

This comes in addition to the usual Bitcoin FUD.  You'd think gamers might be more sensitive to baseless media spin given that gaming itself is often attacked in the media as "warping young minds" and "training killers".

This is actually a credible reason for gamers to be hostile to Bitcoin.
I was initially surprised by the reaction - I expected indifference, not hostility.
But if Bitcoin miners are pushing up the cost of graphics cards, then it is natural for gamers to be hostile.  Grin

It's a very credible reason for them to be hostile, but they're weren't being hostile for that reason, as most of the stupid comments had nothing to do with mining, and more had to do with them believing Bitcoin to be fake money, like the monopoly money comment, and the comments saying farts are worth more, and the comment about making their own digital coin to pay for it.

"but but but...... why use toilet paper when I have a good green leaf to wipe my ass?"

In all fairness that good green leaf could be poison sumac.

I know this is harsh but I don't think that most gamers have the intelligence to come to that conclusion from graphics card prices, especially when you consider their stupid arguments about AMD and Intel or the Xbox and Playstation.

The opinion of IGN posters, seriously? You care what a group of infants think that spend 50% of their time gaming and the other 50% of their time masturbating in the bathroom with a copy of their dads Playboy magazine?

Well after GPU mining was no longer profitable the prices for new cards likely declined to "pre GPU mining" levels. The price for used cards (that probably work just as well from a gamer's perspective) would be even lower. Over the long term it probably helped "gamers" more then it hurt them

Gamers possibly don't have the ability to think long term. Cheesy
Most of them may not even have realized that the prices of used cards has come down.

As a gamer I can tell you there is a lot of 'ready to go' vitriol when it comes to posting around forums.
I always thought gamers would be early adopters, but Ive seen on other websites too how much ignorance there is around BTC. So automatically they turn on the smugger than though, 'I can insult you better cos I know better' crap.
Even if the article includes a basic intro video it doesnt matter, they just love to express their dearest frustrations!
EG http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-12-11-microsoft-now-allows-you-to-buy-xbox-games-with-bitcoin

I dont think its anything to worry about, theyre very fickle and just enjoy the flaming really. Give it some time and they will calm down and find something else to 'hate on' and as BTC gets more integrated they'll flip to the defenders side and many will claim to have been defending it from the start lol.

A fact which is frequently used against them. i.e. Preorder game at $70 vs discounted to $30 a few weeks later.

I have been looking at the gaming websites to see what the reaction to the Microsoft news would be ... and it isn't good!

Have a look at IGN posters http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/12/11/you-can-now-pay-for-xbox-and-windows-content-with-bitcoin

Other forums have similar reactions. I think we have a lot of teaching to do.

I felt the same way before I actually learned about it. I just thought it was some digital token that you buy. I.e. nerd money. I didn't know anything about the Blockchain.

They're gamers, what did you expect?  Most of these people like to tell you how much of a whore your mom is, or how they can kick your as, or... you get the idea.  Gaming and flaming come hand in hand for a lot of gamers, LOL!  I bet a lot of them are young teens who have very little clue how fiat even works. Likely have had mommy and daddy buy most their stuff for them at this point.  Most likely cant grasp the big picture and only see bitcoin for what happened this year, which isn't all that good.

Give them time to learn and get educated from people who know a lot about it.  I think a lot of us thought the same way when were first heard about bitcoin and what it was.
