I had a power supply die on me a couple months ago but it didn't start on fire. It just quit turning on. Was it dirty?

Had a very small rig running in the garage for months, then it just dies.

Perhaps you should look into FPGA options at this time ?

Did it happen on its own? If so, consider yourself lucky that you were present when it happened.

Around July 4th last year, I literally witnessed one of my PSU went up in smoke (and spark) after I switched it on.

I had been 'gifted' a GT 270 a few years ago.. was great awesome wonderful!.... and when i turned on my computer, it blew out my power supply in a shower of sparks. (apperently it had a fault in it that the guy didn't tell me about... a rather broad short circut)
expensive 800watt power supply toasted... -.- was unhappy.

Has this act of god ever occurred with any of you?

A few reports of this:

 - http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=65989.msg766347#msg766347 (allegedly)

I remember seeing a photo with charred walls and melted GPUs from an electrical fire that resulted from the wiring in the walls.

One of the mining operators with a bond (HYDRO) listed on GLBSE took out fire insurance:

If it's a name brand supply, they may be willing to replace some of the hardware that went with it. Much like how UPS and surge protector companies have insurance to cover the rare spectacular failure. No guarantees though, just like with other insurance it can be a pain to get any payout.

My thermaltake 850 has been going strong with my i7 3930k and 7970 so far. I am upgrading to a Corsair 1200 as soon as I can though and adding another 7970.

Yea, adding up the voltage and amperage listed in the Asus GPU tweak tool the card is around 150W during mining. I also have 3 1TB hard drives, 2 180GB Intel SSDs and 2 120GB Intel SSDs and an LSI raid controller. I just want to err on the side of caution as well as future proofing.

You can't go wrong with a Corsair AX-series.  I've had anywhere from 8 to 12 BFL BitForce Singles running off a solitary AX1200 PSU in the lab for some time now.

Yea, I've got a case and H100 water cooler from them and the quality is top notch. I want to step up to the power supply just to future proof and give this 2 year old thermaltake a break. I'll keep it lying around as a spare or maybe running some BFL stuff if people start dumping singles in favor of asics. Not to get rich with, just to play around with. I love dicking around with tech. Hell, I may even pick up an ASIC device, one of the cheap ones, if they actually deliver on what they say they will.

Never had a PSU or anything else go out in my 5 rigs and I've been at it since early 2011.

Only casualty was a fan bearing on a 5830.

Though, I do use a battery backup on each machine, with a line conditioner, and load switcher to industrial outlets.

I also use ferrite chokes on all my power cables.

But maybe I am paranoid.
