Bitcoin armory is pretty much the same as Bitcoin core. Any SPV wallet would be nearly as safe if installed on a online computer while taking less time to sync, if you are in a hurry, you can just import it on blockchain.info or any other SPV client.

Its not im in a hurry it just keeps crashing my computer, driving me mad!

import it?

Transfer your funds out of Bitcoin Core to Electrum, Multibit or Green Address instead, so you don't have download the entire BlockChain.

https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet

You can export your private keys, send funds to BlockChain.info wallet temporarily, then send from Blockchain.info to Electrum or one of the other desktop wallets.

Here's how:

Get the backup of your wallet.dat either at roaming/Bitcoin or your backup location. Next, drag the wallet dat to the box in the site https://blockchain.info/wallet/import-wallet. There isn't a need to run Armory if you just want to use Bitcoin, it is safer, sure but any SPV client can also do the job.

did you try to download the blockchain torrent file from bitcoin.org?

https://bitcoin.org/bin/blockchain/bootstrap.dat.torrent

download it
then copy on your bitcoin install dir and open the wallet...
doing so, you can avoid to download all the blockchain from wallet...

hope this fix your issue!!!!
