Hello, thanks for taking the time to read my post.

I have downloaded bitcoin core. I am new to the whole bitcoin scene so go easy on me please. I purchased 0.2bitcoins and got them sent to my wallet within bitcoin core. Due to me being new to bitcoin i was unaware that I would have to wait for the wallet to sync for me to be able to access my bitcoins.

So with the bitcoin purchased I am now proceeding with syncing my wallet so I am able to access these bitcoins. However when syncing I am finding that it gets stuck on certain block levels. I have found my shutting down the program and reopening the programme this solves the issue and it continues syncing. But I cant do this for the how ever many days it looks like it will take. It doesnt help that my internet is extremely slow due to the area that I live in.

I have started downloading the bootstrap torrent after reading that is a quicker way ( all 17GB ). However I am wondering if this method is possible because I have already purchased my bitcoins. If it possible to download the bootstrap torrent without losing my bitcoins that I have already got I would be very grateful for some assistance on how to do this.

My other option which again I dont know if this is possibe, is to transfer the bitcoins to an online wallet??? But I am not sure if this is possible due to the fact that I cant see them in current wallet as it is not yet synced.

Once again I appreciate any help, I have been trawling the internet all evening to try and find a solution.

Thanks Dan

Moving forward, be sure that your wallet is synced before all transactions. Anyway, leaving that behind:

I don't think it is possible to transfer the Bitcoins at the moment using Bitcoin core; If you get the private key of your address and then imported that to an online wallet (such as with Blockchain.info) then you could use your Bitcoin.

What address did you send them to? Check with blockchain.info (which has it's bugs, but is generally very reliable) and make sure that the Bitcoins are where you sent them; if they are, then you're just fine and have to wait for the download to finish.

Regarding the download constantly getting stuck - I remember this happening to me and I just remember closing and reopening the client as well. I assume after a certain period of time it would automatically become "unstuck".

The bootstrap just saves you the time of downloading the block chain over the bitcoin network. The results are the same. Just make sure your wallet is encrypted and backed up before you do anything.

You should try different kind of wallets and learn more on how they manage your private keys before choosing one. Also don't put all your eggs in the same basket.

Put your address in blockchain.info to confirm that the transactions you have done are correct. I use the blockchain page a lot and only enter the wallet to create a new address if I need it and to send, recieve. To check balances I use the blockchain.info page because having to wait for the wallet to sync sucks, and I dont like the lightweight ones.

Yes, sent bitcoin should show up after your wallet finishes synching

Also, for future reference, you can verify funds have been sent to an address on blockchain.info at anytime as well (while your waiting for your local blockchain to be updated) Wink

I know this is a old bump, but for my own clarity, will downloading the bitcoin-qt torrent affect any coins i have already purchased and transferred to my un-sync'd wallet?
Im in exactly the same case as the op

Im downloading the torrent now, but i dont want it to mess with what i have already purchased.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Make sure you have a backup of your current wallet and store it in a safe place.  That way if you accidentally do something wrong and delete your current addresses, you will be able to recover them from the backup.

Hell anything could happen, i have had my blockchain corrupted many times so i suggest take a backup of that whole Roaming-Bitcoin folder with
your wallet.dat file. If you have any bootstrap keep it stored too.

I once had this problem. It was faster running bitcoind with only 1 connection during the initial blockchain download.
