I mined alt-coins (LTC, etc) up until about a year ago, and stopped... Looking to see if anything is profitable to mine with a single R9 280x any more? Thoughts? Any recommendations on pools to join?

check foldingcoin
if you setup correctly, and if using passkey in folding@home it is maybe profitable after 10 Work Units and bonus points.
it can be not-so-bad comparing to other coins

using 1 7970 and 1 280x
today i earned 2000 fldc
can right now sell for 156 satoshis in 'bid price' - for 0.00312 BTC
don't know if it covers electricity, depends on your price
for me it doesn't

not hashing, folding and curing (check FLDC merged-folding! reuse good GPUs)

but it feels good to run something useful on GPU
right now it maybe won't cover electricity
if BTC will rise - it will at long term

running folding@home and getting payed for it, is great

not hashing, folding and curing (check FLDC merged-folding! reuse good GPUs)

R9 280x is basically the same as 7970, so look in this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=959512.0

Mine on a multi pool that picks the most profitable coin for you.  The MineBitShares multi pool pays out in BitUSD which will always = usd, hence do not need to worry about day to day volatility.  Trade the BitUSD for anything you want later on such as BitShares, BitGold, BitEuro etc... on the internal market or exchange on a 3rd party market for btc.

Nvidia is better but still not good enough to ROI from GPU.
