I just chatted with someone at Coinbase and confirmed that it is a scam.

Why is it that every time a story of actual importance hits the main page it gets moved to one of the near-invisible sub-pages that nobody ever visits?

They are pretty sophisticated, even generated separate Bitcoin address for each email.

I also got this email, and I have never been on the Coinbase website.

I have been on Localbitcoins, but I never registered there or shared this email address there. Editing this because I just checked past emails and I did use this email address with localbitcoins in June 2013. So they must have gotten my email address there.

It was most likely the Coinbase DB that was hacked.

I got it, never even been to coinbases website. I do however have a btcjam account, someone else suggested a connection there?

Coinbase needs to display their public IP used on their email headers, or this could become a bigger problem than it is today, since users have no means of confirming these emails.

Coinbase needs to display their public IP used on their email headers, or this could become a bigger problem than it is today, since users have no means of confirming these emails.

Coinbase would never provide a BTC address to send to, especially through regular text email.  They'd announce it on their official Twitter or on their blog first.

For any payments, you'd have to login to Coinbase first, provide 2 FA code, before you even get to submit any sort of payment.  Never to a direct wallet address.

Some people will fall, whenever these mails appear many people fall, such as fake paypal emails, there have been a lot of spam and as always many people fall because it seems real.

It is obviously a scam,  that should not even be debated.  What is bothersome is Bitjams inability to keep our email addresses out of the hands of parasites that cannot earn a living without outright theft. Karma! The hurt you cause someone will one day haunt you and will inflict 10x the pain back.
